So some of ya'll might recall me from my most recent post regarding PMD tips, and I really appreciated everyone who responded! They'll be super helpful when I actually start (haven't had the time to start playing yet)! I asked this in my last topic, but who did everyone get for their starters on the quiz? Also, did anyone try to deliberately get a certain starter-partner duo, and if you did, do you have any suggestions for a newbie? Not sure if trying for certain Pokemon would hinder the experience at all, or how others feel about it. I know it's not really necessary to ask this here, but I really enjoy getting the input, and from my other posts concerning PMD, they seem to be pretty well loved games, so figured it would be a good way to connect with other fellow Pokefans.

I've gotten a variety of starters over the years (I think my first pair was Squirtle and Pikachu and recently I got Skitty and Cyndaquil), but on my current game in Rescue Team DX I'm running Eevee and Cubone.
I don't like it when my partner is a water or fire type... they tend to run off in dungeons that have environment tiles they can walk on. but I also don't actively avoid them and pick my partner to balance out my type coverage, so sometimes I end up with a water or fire type anyway.
tbh I'd say just... go with whatever you get. don't try to get something specific. pick whichever partner you like.

I never really liked what I got in Explorers of Sky. I think I always got something like Turtwig or Chikorita.
A lot of the appeal to me when it comes to this franchise is using my favorites, so I used an online guide to make myself a Charmander / Riolu / Pikachu / Totodile. As for partner, again I just picked my faves, hah. Preferably something to cover my type weaknesses.
Charmader and Riolu are Aggressors, Pikachu is a Speedster, and Totodile is a Tank. I tend to play aggressively but very conservative with my items. Having said that, I have yet to get through Zero Isle South. Apparantly it's an extremely difficult dungeon. Maybe I never will. Oh well!

Hello again! <3
My first team ever was a Mudkip/Vulpix duo. I didn't force any starter, as I like to use the opportunity to grow more attached to pokemon I wasn't before. Plus, I've always thought Mudkip was adorable. I was diagnosed lonely type a lot in the quizzes, but timid was/is just as frequent.
Anyways! For your first playthrough, I encourage you to pick whichever partner you like the most. However, I'd advise AGAINST Eevee partner do to her ability being abysmal for the game... That being said, hero Eevee is perfectly fine. I think this was already said in the tip thread iirc.
No matter which partner you choose, there's going to be tricky dungeons. There's going to be pokemon that neither member is super effective against. If you're unlucky, you might even come across a boss enemy that's super effective against BOTH members. Happened to me in Blue Rescue Team. U_U
Just remember to bring reviver seeds and oran berries!

Hmm for your first test I'd recommend just taking it and then after if you don't vibe with your assigned starter you can reset until you find one you do like :3
Whenever you pick your partner, I'd recommend maybe picking one that covers the others weakness? I played Red Rescue team & got stuck in a fire dungeon because I was a Bulbasaur/Meowth pair when I was little.
if you ever play psmd I recommend having a grass starter & water partner just because its cute ^^

In Explorers of Time, I was Meowth and my partner was Torchic. Not a team with the best utility, but I was determined to be a Meowth regardless of its power, so the challenge was not unwelcome. XD
(Torchic was not a deliberate choice, it's just what I was given. I like Torchic and its evolutionary line, so I was like "Yeah, okay. Cool!")
Any team can beat the game, and each combination will have its own cakewalks and challenges throughout.
(I've heard that there are some combinations that are very good due to their movepools, though I'm not familiar enough with the meta of the MD games to say which those would be. XD Someone else might be able to answer which combos are the best for steamrolling the game.)
My best advice is to pick the Pokemon you personally vibe with the most.
If you can't decide, then perhaps take a peek at the move pools of each choice (for the game version you'll be playing) and see which ones have the abilities that appeal to you the most.

I played Sky! I was Treecko and my partner was Torchic. I took the quiz sincerely. I chose Torchic because of an old friend of mine and because I just think they’re neat.
I actually think my team did pretty well! Having access to Absorb and Mega Drain really helped my survivability, especially due to how new I was. Torchic was pretty good with moves like Sand Attack for utility and the super long range Flamethrower!
as far as I know, Riolu and Pikachu are both very strong choices, and Cyndaquil’s Smokescreen is good too.

I always picked my starters to be honest. I never really liked what the quiz gave me most of the time lol
I was Meowth and Pikachu in Time, Shinx and Vulpix in Sky on my first playthroughs. I can't remember what I used in Blue, I think it was Eevee and Pikachu?
In Super Mystery Dungeon I did actually go with what the quiz gave me because I got Fennekin, which was what I wanted anyway lol, Pikachu as partner again in that game
DX I think I was Eevee and Pikachu (yes, again)
I usually pick Pikachu as my partner because Discharge is super broken and he learns it relatively early, like level 32 or 34 I think?

Meowth and Skitty are actually both extremely good; multi-hit moves (i.e. Fury Swipes, Double-Slap) in PMD are completely broken unlike main series games. Meowth also gets extremely good IQ skills (I hate that they removed those in future games... they were so fun and felt special)
Ultimately you should go with whatever you like best.

Oh for sure. The multi-hit moves are great, and meowth has some nice scouting abilities. (I definitely didn't manage to unlock all of my IQ skills in my run, so that probably made things harder than they should've been. XD)
My main struggle was against fullscreen/ranged moves. Some dungeons were relentless. XD

Ooooh I was very particular about what pokemon my hero and partner were lmao. Especially for Explores Of Sky, that was my favorite as a kid!
I always had to be a Vulpix. Every time I restarted I'd look up cheat guides on which answers to pick. I'd still have to redo it sometimes if I didn't get the right questions.
Then I'd always pick Riolu to be the partner. His name was always Jack and the hero was Rose.
Not really any strategical-ness to this I just made them my own characters and got attached I guess lol. Though I think it is a decent pair up, as when I figured out how to actually strategize (using items, proper move use, etc) things were decently easy.
