I don't know if anyone has thought of this but I have begun doing this.
I use 3 dragons for 2 pairs total.
I take one common and breed them to two different rare breeds... because the cooldown of a common pair is nearly 2x the times of a wildclaw, for example. I think I have to wait a max of 3-5 days between the cooldowns for the common dragon to be ready, but it has been serving me exceptionally well if you're willing to keep track of it. In total I have about 12 dragons breeding for this project, but 3 of them are technically paired together, in a sense. This makes 8 pairs. Really good for fodder if you're short on lair space.

My setup is a little excessive in that I have 4 Plentiful dragons, each paired to 3 Wildclaws. So every Plentiful is always (as long as I remember to breed them) either on cooldown or on a nest. I am "missing" one Wildclaw male because I sold him. So I do have one set that is currently as LuxK explained.

It works really well in my experience! Good luck to those who try it :)

I've been doing this for awhile...I use it as my fodder pairs and at this moment I have 47 dragons included...Originally they were matched up two wildclaws to 1 plentiful, now it's wily nilly pairings to get different colors. I have rotated a few parents out but at this point I'm slightly attached to the ones involved lol.
