End of D3

The weather station made it four blissful hours into this day before any disasters occurred. The sky was clear for once, so there was no need to worry about the holes in the umbrellas when broadcasting the next few days’ weather; the coffee machine was working perfectly, the interns were studious and focused, and there was even a container of oranges in the fridge politely labeled FEEL FREE TO TAKE ONE :). All was well, until…

“I’m doing an inspection,” the security officer announced, slamming down a clipboard on the head script writer’s desk. “Are you responsible for the events of forty minutes ago?”

The script writer blinked up at him through comically large glasses, baffled. “The what? I thought the whole roof thing was this morning, and that wasn’t me, anyway?”

“That’s not the topic of this investigation,” the security officer insisted, pushing the clipboard to the writer, who signed the slot next to their name almost without looking at the contents of the paper. “A far more sinister force is at play. Listen!”
“I… have no idea what you’re talking about,” the writer said, slowly pushing their chair away from the security officer. “Shouldn’t you be investigating the sabotage…?”

“Yeah, that’s pretty serious,” one of the interns piped up sagely from one desk over. “Took one of my friends already. Terrible stuff. I think it’s the rats.”

“The what?”

The security officer, ignoring both of them, pointed frantically towards the speaker in the corner of the room. “The music! Someone’s tampered with it! It’s going to hurt us all!”

“Well, that can’t be the rats,” the intern said, then frowned, thinking. “Maybe they’re not rats. They had, like, antlers?”

“They had what?”

“I guess it’s worth investigating then,” the intern concluded, tapping their chin. “If it’s something one of us did. But the music sounds fine to me?”

The music did, indeed, sound fine. Sort of like a soft jazz song, maybe? It would have been more fitting on a rainy day, but it was perfectly nice today, too. The security officer, unconvinced and uninterested in the rats, grabbed the intern with one hand and the writer with the other, pulling them over to the corner to stand directly beneath the speaker. “Listen! You’ll see!”

“Um,” the intern said nervously, squirming out of his grasp and taking a step backward. “I don’t think the issue is the sound here…?”

“Yeah,” the script writer agreed, taking an even larger step back. For once, they seemed to have forgotten about the rats. “You should be careful with, uh—”

The jazz music transitioned to a moment of pleasant, quiet piano. The wires holding the speaker to the wall creaked softly above the security officer, who was still gesturing wildly at the other two. “It’s an act of evil! Someone—”

With a dramatic thud, the giant speaker fell, directly atop the poor security officer, who let out a sad yelp as it squished him into a comically flat shape… or maybe he’d disappeared, because there were no traces of blood or flesh left on the ground. “I told you so,” the intern said gloomily. “There’s not even anything else wrong with it.”

The speaker, which had gone silent after falling from the wall, miraculously came back to life for its last act of revenge, which was announcing in increasingly ridiculous voices, “PIANO. HOUSE PIANO. CLARINET. ORGAN. GUITAR. HEAVY GUITAR!”

“… Ah.”

The script writer sighed, dusting off their clothes. “Can you tell me more about the rats now?”
