My wild guess? Dragon allergies.
They're allergic to something that all pieces of apparel use, and thus can't wear any of it. (Yes, even the chickens, lizards and bird apparel...) Can I explain it? Nope

In my lore, I treat the re-integration of ancient dragons into modern society as a recent thing (ignore how many years it's been since gaolers were relased shhhhh). So the reason they don't wear clothes is mostly just cuz the tailor's haven't caught up and they aren't used to modern fashion.
But I do like to think they would wear clothes the same as other dragons. Dragons in my clan have varying degrees of clothing coverage (there are so few fully covering outfits, esp when your clan is 60% spirals) so I like to think of my ancients with simple harnesses or belts for tools and weapons or general protective gear.

In my own lore, they wear clothes if they feel like it, same as any other dragon.
Most of my ancients are retconned into "they've been here all along, I just didn't have any permas until now." So there is no cultural reason for them not to wear clothes; they're fully integrated into modern society.
In some cases it may be more difficult for them to find off-the-rack clothing that fits, but I imagine there are clothing stores e.g. directly catering to aberrations, and custom tailoring also exists. However, not everyone needs clothes (moderns included), and they can happily rock nothing if they want.

My headcanon is that the apparel that we use is sets of premade clothing for the standardized modern dragon breeds. So like clothing that will generally fit an Imp vs clothing that will generally fit a Spiral… Ancients can’t wear any of this pre-made clothing since their body shapes tend to vary much more (Canon Abberations massively varying in body shape and size, Gaolers choosing to have differing fur length, etc). However, every dragon can wear custom made clothing or body paint (UMAs) since it’s custom made/tailored to each dragon.

In-lore I'd imagine it's less that they can't and more that they typically choose not to.

I mean, there's very little practical reason for dragons to wear most apparel anyway. They don't have soft squishy skin like we humans do that bleeds after one measly scrape or require clothing to be worn for cultural reasons (as we see most NPCs in very little or no apparel).
So, yes, I think it's all personal dragon-y preference, for Moderns or Ancients. [emoji=ridgeback happy size=1] Glass and Gloss wear apparel, but Scribbles and Pipp don't.

Honestly I think it could be really funny if they just never needed them before. Auras were in the trees, Dusthides underground, Sandsurges underground, ect. And most of those places don't boad well for any apparel's material and grew up without that need, and now don't have a real huge want for clothes. And it's perfectly fine for moderns to be without apparel in lore, so perhaps it's just not a real issue to get clothes that fit over those odd tert genes or body types

There's no real reason, it's a fully out of lore compromise. If they couldn't wear apparel in universe that would be...a bit concerning. It would set a precedence that "ancient" dragons weren't smart enough to wear them.

Well, you see, every Ancient is imbued with a spark of the bygone age their breed lived and died within, and this spark holds the sacred power of Time, one of the thirteen elements of the world consigned to Ages yet to come, with no gods to champion them.
Due to a lack of ability to control this spark, it projects a field of Time around them, causing them to carry around a fragment of their aeon wherever they wander. This fragment rejects things that violate its law, mainly other dragon breeds and modern apparel.

i simply ignore it and pretend my ancients are decked out in drip
or i also interpret it as there not being many well-fitting items for them other than simple things like rings bangles simple capes and cloths etc cause ancients are only recently joining FR society in-lore!
