When Flight Rising started, nests used to "incubate" automatically over a period of 5 days before they could hatch. However, it required you to click "incubate" on a nest every day, or your eggs would actually rot and die. Dead eggs would not hatch, and would have to be discarded.
Though this functionality was changed to our current incubation system for obvious reasons, remnants of egg rot remain. The "eggs discarded" count still exists in Account Settings, and players whose eggs rotted still have that number to this day.
Even worse, look at the image code for a nest.

They never changed the actual images, just removed egg rot. You can actually see what the dead eggs look like by changing the number next to "dead" in the image code. See [url=http://www1.flightrising.com/forums/frd/2222777]this post[/url] for examples.
