Workshopping a fully automatable alternative to iri/shim for ancients.
I've been working on this idea for a while and I think it can be a way to implement a gene similar to iri/shim for ancients without having to do it by hand. This gene uses the same accent colors as varnish and laquer, and can easily be recolored via automation.
It's still in the early testing stages as I'm trying out different concepts to figure out what does and doesn't work.
Here's the general concept:
Two sets of 3-color gradients that pull the same accent colors as varnish/laquer; overlayed over the basic gene at 85% opacity. Highlights similar to irishim added. Perhaps the highlight could pull from an accent color in some way as well, but I left it untinted in my mockups because I'm not sure how exactly automation works with regards to shadows and highlights.
(excuse the bad highlights, my tablet is not working atm)
Some color examples:
Obsidian
White
Colors with monotone varnish/lacquer accents:
Red
This is where the trouble begins, I thought to modify my original gradients to include the accent color from blend/fade but perhaps ended up way too washed out and cluttered. At this point I also edited the secondary gradient to include more color in the wing.
Red with extra gradient (blend/fade accent color)
Unfortunately this also doesn't work with all colors as the new gradient's color clashes with the color of the gradient underneath it, so I have to keep working.
Next step: reverse all gradients and try again.
Now let's test this on some new colors.
Murk
Bubblegum
Orca
Works well enough so far, will probably reach another roadblock as I keep testing colors.
To be continued..
