i know you said you don’t like modern fantasy but i’m legally obligated to recommend percy jackson lol. it’s mainly targeted towards kids but it still holds up as an adult, plus the way mythology is integrated is really interesting

I can highly recommend most things by Becky Chambers, but especially her extremely short but sweet books starting with A Psalm for the Wild Built. It's hopeful and it really doesn't overstay it's welcome, and there's nothing daunting about them, which I really appreciate. Her other book series starting with The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet are also quite good, and it feels like it draws inspiration here and there from Firefly, in that there's folks on a ship doing a job who all have their thing, none of the typical Joss Whedon nonsense attached.
Clara and the Sun is an extremely well written and heartfelt journey (wow I sound like a book review) that deals with a lot of interesting topics ranging from obsolescence, to growing up, dealing with terminal illness, and what it means to have a sense of self. It's lighter on the sci-fi than I typically liked, and it was a slower read than I was used to, but I did end up sobbing at the end.

I am 1000% percent obsessed with Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time series. The third book just came out and I bought it and it's sitting on my TBR pile, but like. I can't make myself pick it up. Because then I'll just read it and it'll be over, and I don't want it to be over.
Edit: I neglected to mention anything about it because I am a dork. It is a speculative sci fi book about a planet that is terraformed and meant to be populated by monkeys who are administered a serum that is supposed to make them evolve incredibly fast and prepare the plant to be inhabited by humans, but there's a horrible mistake, and instead of monkeys, the super serum is given to... jumping spiders. And it's amazing.

omg yessss! I need to let myself have a weekend to enjoy it soon. I preordered it ages ago and when it finally arrived I panicked because it’s such a treat, I didn’t want to read it and have post-show low.
I don’t know why I love this sort of thing so much. The gaining of knowledge and consciousness and its impact on species evolution or an individual’s choices is one of my favorite sci fi themes.
