TOPIC | [LIGHTNING] Cafe Buddies Writing Contest
Painted on an ancient tree, deep in the heart of the Tangled Wood, is a prophecy. These drawings foretell of a strange, shapeshifting creature, crafted out of pure darkness. It lays beside the Shadowbinder, whispering secrets it has observed in her domain. Its magic is strange and forgotten. The creature can disappear into anything with a reflection. Often, shadow dragons pondering themselves in the mirror will catch a glimpse of the Shadowbinder’s right hand, only for it to disappear in the next moment. The most common place to sight the creature is the driftwood drag, where it slips in and out of streams and ponds.
If one observes the drawings, there is something peculiar of note. The formless creature, taking the shape of a docile familiar, leaving the shadowlands behind. It can be seen popping out of an oasis somewhere in the Highland Scrub, and heading towards a great metal tower. The drawings end there, some cut off by deep gouges in the tree bark, like claw marks. The greatest minds of dragon kind have studied these paintings, but nobody knows for sure what it means. Perhaps you have a mind for science, and the desire to uncover the truth? After all, nobody’s tried asking the creature what it thinks of all this.

Emskaru the Scrambled Chimera is not only the first of her kind, but also one of the most accomplished.
She has saved countless lives as the fearless, agile, headstrong Search and Rescue leader. She can slip into the smallest spaces, climb vertical cliffs, and has never met an obstacle that she can’t ram her way through.
No matter what the nature of the need, Emskaru will be there. She is as clever as she is stubborn, and determined to do whatever must be done in order to solve any problem she may have to face.
She has tunneled through the plains of earth, climbed the greatest icy glaciers, slid through the gears of arcane inventions. From the deepest oceans to the highest mountain, she has continued to learn and improve with every challenge overcome.
Now, Emskaru is starting a training program, open to any creature with a desire to help others. She has created hands-on practice areas to help her students experiment with new knowledge and develop their own strengths and personal style. Emskaru’s belief is that there is no wrong way to help people, and she is incredibly excited to be able to put that in to practice with her new school of search and rescue specialists.
In her spare time, she love being able to come to the cafe and relax. Her day job is non-stop intensity, so nothing makes her happier than being able to spend time with people enjoying themselves in a safe, cozy, comfortable cafe.

Gluggaveður (which is Icelandic for “window weather”) the Goopy-Boi is a patron of his name.
Wherever he goes, he is followed by the kind of rain that is too wet to be a mist, but not quite enough to be the sort of rain that can actually be repelled with an umbrella. It’s the kind of weather that’s cold, and clings and makes everything just damp enough to be unpleasant. The kind of weather that is meant to be viewed through a window while staying cozy and dry inside.
Which also means it’s the perfect weather for curling up inside your nearest cafe, grabbing a hot drink and staying dry inside!
Though Gluggaveður may be a harbinger of less-than-excellent weather, he himself is warm and friendly. Gluggaveður is never happier than when he gets to curl up on the lap of a new friend. (The cafe does offer aprons, for those who may wish them.) Even if the weather is cold and miserable, Gluggaveður is a light of affection and friendship, and he makes it his mission to leave even the chilliest patrons feeling toasty and loved.
Just like drizzly rain will find every hole in your shoes, Gluggaveður will seep into every corner of your heart.
