Happy NotN! Enjoy!

For Midas:
Gold that glitters, fades, is lost;
Beauty tarnished by the frost.
Gilt and glimmer, elder shade;
In the meadows where you played
A song to make the minstrels weep,
Lull us once again to sleep;
The pines bend down to listen still,
Insistent yet to have their fill.
Drop your talons to the stone,
Poised, you will wait here alone
Until the dying of those ways,
Until the passage of the days
Unthaws a heart turned back to gold.
A fairer curse could not be sold:
But alas! O dreamer, and alack!
You cannot give this beauty back.
Happy NotN! Enjoy!

For Darona:
In the forest there’s a well,
The contents too far deep to tell.
What lies there coiled in the depths?
What lies there waiting for the breath
Of decay and despair to pass on by?
Tell me when and tell me why
The branch-strewn serpent made her way
Through the woodlands, so they say,
Trailing dusk and feverfew,
Nightshade, snakeroot, hemlock too;
They slowly grow and fade away
When this elder serpent strayed
And plunged into the darkness black;
No fever there shall hold her back.

For Khione:
Soft as snow, as frost, as rain,
Serene and cold in timeless reign -
Upon a throne of ice,
Of bone and breath,
Of old advice.
Crown, o serpent, upon your head
The jewels, the songs, the woven thread;
Gaze up, o queen,
Away from death
To sights unseen.
Where rests this queen of silver frost?
Where tests the mettle of her knights?
The place where prophets do exhaust
Their visions, there their voices lost –
There her will shall e’er suffice
In that land of endless ice.
