By "broken up into rectangles" I meant something similar to how your Harvester Bees or Black Alaska examples are hexagons and circles.
As for dragons, could one or two of the rectangles have this dragon or this one? (scry links because of apparel and a missing gene, sorry)

The problem of rectangles is that they don't allow for the background to come through as other shapes would, and intersecting them doesn't get a pretty result unlike, say, circles.
