Summary
Elkia is a world fraught with peril. The continent of Sobos, where you currently reside, is a land where kingdoms are locked in a constant war for control over the region. Territory is constantly changing hands, and civilians on bordering towns and cities live in perpetual fear of invasion. Some of these nations are horrific tyrannies where entire populations are enslaved and discrimination runs rampant. Others are bastions of progress and equality marred by nigh-perpetual poverty as they struggle to maintain their borders without resorting to immoral means. Regardless of where you're from, the one universal constant seems to be that with most of each nation's forces dedicated to the war effort, crime runs rampant throughout all but the wealthiest locales. For one reason or another, you've come to the conclusion that you have to leave. Maybe you deserted your nation's army, or perhaps you're an escaped slave in search of freedom. Maybe your village was burned to the ground, or your family abandoned you to better be able to support their remaining children. Maybe you're just tired of living in fear and dream of a better life. Whatever your story, you've come to the conclusion that you have to get out of Sobos. Stories abound of the world north of the continent where nations are stable, food is plentiful, and opportunity is there for the taking. The closest of these nations, known as Loswick, is your ultimate destination. There's just one problem; the trip. The seas are on complete lockdown by those nations fortunate enough to claim a slice of the coast, and the only land-based way out is so dangerous that even armies are reluctant to travel them without ample preparation. Still, rumor has it there are a handful of skilled guides willing to brave the danger to help escort caravans of pilgrims and refugees. One such guide is picking up passengers in a small, quiet tavern just south of the forest marking the beginning of the route...
(TL;DR Version: You're stuck in a terrible, war-torn part of a fantasy world, so you're meeting up with a guide willing to lead you through the perilous route to a more peaceful land.)
The Route
The road from Sobos to Loswick is paved with danger. Your journey will take you through several terrifying locations...
Deadwood
The enchanted forest of Deadwood is a thing of stories in the surrounding towns. The dangers inside, however, are very real. Many a curious child has been lost to the threats within. While reasonably safe during the day, highly territorial monsters prowl the woods at night.
Baleful Bog
Close to the end of Deadwood is the Baleful Bog, a terrifying swamp where the water itself is toxic to the touch and dangerous beasts lurk beneath the murk. Be sure you're well-stocked on provisions before getting here, because just about everything is poisonous.
Dragon Cliffs
The only way to cross to the next continent is a short rope bridge. A better one might have been put together by now, but the sound of construction has a way of irritating the dragons that the place is named for. It's only a short leg of the journey, provided that nothing has knocked it down...
Corrupted Cavern
A lengthy ride down the underground river of this cavern marks the final stretch of the trip, but it's dark and immensely easy to get lost in. Bundle up, for the terrible magic that clings to this place has given it an unearthly chill. Immersion in the water will cause an ordinary human to succumb to hypothermia in seconds. Better make sure your boat stays intact.
How to Join
Please request to join by filling out the empty profile below and posting it in this thread. Remember to use @Klei to ping me! Assuming it's accepted, I'll respond telling you as much, then edit this post to add your profile to the list of accepted characters. The details about the war-torn continent of Sobos have been left intentionally vague, so feel free to make up whatever country and culture you want for your character. The same goes for race; you can be whatever you want (within reason). Elf, dwarf, orc, fairy, troll, centaur, naga, drider... Just nothing too blatantly game-breaking like gods or all-powerful spirits or whatever. If your character has powers, don't go totally overboard.
In the event that someone wants to join in the middle of the roleplay, and the RP has been going on long enough that it would be too awkward to pretend that they were there all along, we can have you join up as someone who was separated from or otherwise lost their original group to disaster prior to the arrival of the main party.

Accepted Characters
Character Name: Reigo GreenUser Name: Klei
Gender: Female
Orientation: Lesbian
Race: Gnoll (Hyena Humanoid)
Age: 19
Skills/Powers/Abilities: Reigo is quick, stealthy, and agile. She's not strong enough to be any good in direct combat, but she's an excellent climber with plenty of stamina. Her strong stomach enables her to eat things that would make a human sick. However, as a biological carnivore, she's incapable of surviving off of plant life, and requires meat to survive.
Appearance: Reigo is physically small in stature, measuring up to only about four feet in height. Her appearance is similar to a spotted hyena, brown with a black snout, tail, and spots all across her body. Her teeth are incredibly sharp.
Personality: Reigo is a playful, outgoing brat with a kleptomaniac streak. She has a tendency to hoard things she doesn't necessarily need out of a belief that they might come in handy someday. She can also be rather selfish, and is generally reluctant to share things like food or water with anyone but her closest friends. Confident and self-assured as she may seem on the outside, she secretly craves attention and external validation.
Background: Reigo spent her formative years in a nomadic tribe of gnolls that wandered the grasslands between kingdoms. When she was eight years old, however, the land she called home was claimed by multiple separate rulers and ultimately burned to ash in a battle for dominion. Most of her people perished, her family included, and Reigo was left alone. Initially, she sustained herself by begging for coin, but it wasn't long before she turned to stealing from traveling merchants and other such travelers on the road in order to sustain herself.
Current Events and Plans
The roleplay has not yet started, but this section will be periodically updated to detail what's currently happening in the roleplay. The plan for the immediate future of the plot is that players will meet up with an old woman in the Tall Tale Tavern claiming to be an experienced guide who's made this journey several times in the past. (You can choose to be there either by chance or because you specifically sought her out; it's up to you.)
