The dragons clustered ‘round the bags full of dust
that the Exalt had gifted, looking like they’d combust.
“So, what is this?” Asked the ridgeback from before
as she poked at a sack; some dust spilled to the floor.
“You said that we’d need it, but how did you know?
Is there some demonstration for us you could show?”
”Do we eat it?” A young coatl trilled in suggestion.
“NO WAY!” cried the Exalt, “That’s pure imperfection,
See, it even says ‘TOXIC’ right here on the sack.
If you eat any dust you’ll get miles of flak!
What you do is you mix this with water or snow,
cast this ancient spell and then there you all go!”
Before them a patch suddenly glowed luminescent,
the spilled dust from before - it had turned iridescent!
When a mirror looked and his face greeted him back,
he whooped: “It’s a mirror! Of steel - we’re on track!
We can use this for traps and go poison their meal!
While they’re reeling from stomach aches, then we can seal!”
”But wait, how’s this something you already know?”
The wildclaw: “This answer is one that you owe.
No doubt you’ve been helpful and treated us well,
but Exalt ex Machina is somewhat less swell.
So what is your story? What’s your personal stake?”
Some comrades, too, stared, no sound did they make.
The exalt, she scowled, and then bristled her fur,
“I’ve been here for a while, the past is a blur.
Before I was exalted, my friends and I found
these freakish ghosts trapped, hiding deep underground.
We were stupid! And now I’m left here all alone,
is it wrong that to petty revenge I am prone?
”I found the Oracle first - yes I did!
I was the one who never ran and hid -
When the ghosts stole my friends, I stole all their freedom -
I didn’t need dust, I knew how to seal them!
So what if that backfired? What if I was wrong?
You heard what that thing said - my friends are all gone!”
”I think you should sit this one out,” said the Wildclaw,
“Though we’ll use all your dust to prevent the Wraiths’ land thaw.
Your anger is just gonna put us at risk,
If you want to come join us you’d better be brisk;
I get where you come from - no, really, I do...
But our showdown’s soon and our crew needs to be true.”
He turned to his allies, couldn’t help but to squint,
his eyes, tearing, filled with some desperate glint.
“Has anyone solved it? What’s our final task?
What Icewarden bid us, how the Wraiths we unmask?”
He was met with a silence, his heart started to sink
then a pearlcatcher came forwards, his face flushed with pink.
”I know the answer!” He sang with a wink,
“It simply seems weird ‘cos you all overthink.
Why’d the Oracle give magic mirror dust, huh,
if that’s not the solution - mirrors! It’s simple, duh!”
And he beamed at them brightly as the setting sun
cued the Wraiths’ dark arrival: The test had begun.
