O f all the dragon crews that were ever whispered of, none of Sornieth came up to this in barbarity. Their mirth and their anger had much the same effect, for both were usually
gratified with the lamentation of their enemies; so that they almost as often murdered from the excess of good humour, as out of passion or anger. One can never be assured of safety from them, for DANGER LURKS IN THEIR VERY SMILES.

Clan Windfall are as treacherous and changing as the waves, but so too
can they be loyal, steadfast as the tide. Should you win their friendship,
you will have it to the grave.

NqcYTvz.png +++++ The craft of a legend is a delicate matter. It requires a deft and steady hand, a sharp mind and calculated purpose. The trick of it is in making your story run before you, carried on the wind like so much seaspray and salt. The fear that turns bowels to water at the sight of that grim black banner snapping at its jackstaff; it is that which is needed.

In truth, while Khaegris and many of her villainous company enjoy a good brawl as much as the next pirate, the wildclaw matriarch has grown wise in her time sailing the bloodied seas of Sornieth. The wisdom is profit, and comfort. Every time a shot is fired, or a sword raised in anger, there is a chance for injury, disfigurement, and death. Far better that her prey be so consumed by fear that they strike their colours as she raises hers. Far better that the mere mention of her name turn minds to death and slaughter than of a fight which could be won.

And so the pirates of Clan Windfall spend much of their time tending to their legend, weaving wickedness into their names and countenances until they look the nightmares walking that their legends whisper them to be. The Butcher of (B name?), the Savages of the Southern Seas, yes, all these names are known and worn with pride and a show of fang and claw.

Of course, it is not only threat that the pirates offer. Every now and then a prize ship choses to resist instead of surrender, and Khaegris and her crew of rogues deliver on the promise of their story.

Deep within the Southern Icefields, somewhere between the Cloudscape Crags and the Fortress of Ends, carved into the steel-grey cliffs assaulted by an iron, angry sea, the clan makes its home. For all creatures need comfort, no matter how they purport not to, and every dragon needs a place to rest, no matter how vast and mighty their wings.

Carved within the permafrost, the lair glows with a soft golden light, visible from a great distance in all but the most impenetrable of squalls; the clan is dug into permafrost and glacier, after all, and the walls let some of the light escape. Not every dragon that makes their home here is a pirate, corsair or brigand, though they are every one of them outsiders who feel for one reason or other forced to make a life outside of polite society.

There are priests, merchants, storytellers, dealers. Purveyors of comforts both earthly, sinful and wholesome. They are a motley bunch, reliant on the success of the hunting crews to survive. While of course, the fictionalisation of piracy involves in its very fabric romance, adventure, and the pursuit of that lofty goal of freedom, I am not interested in the glossy childhood pirates that dance across screens in vivid technicolour. My heart is stirred by men and women, bloodstained and strained, who did the best they could with the hand they were dealt in life. Men and women who were not good, but existed in a time where even civilization and the law were capable of what were today unimaginable acts of barbarism and villainy. Do not forget that in the 18th century, empires would press young men aboard ships to serve before the mast; literally chained below decks when the ship made port. Do not forget that to buy and sell a living, thinking, loving human being was as natural and everyday as buying and selling a bolt of cloth, or a sturdy beast. It was a time that seems at first blush so very like our own; a time of enlightenment, infant science, and society that we feel we could integrate into. But rebellion and revolution such as was found in places like Nassau do not rise up because of an abundance of kindness and opportunity; this was a world that was kind to the fortunate and cruel to all those who made the mistake of being born poor, disabled, of the wrong colour skin, of having a lover who shares your sex, of being an ambitious woman, of being different. THE RESPITE, if you are interested in supporting my draconic labour of love, or in joining the many crews and bands of Clan Windfall.

There are no bloodless pirates, it is true. Even Stede Bonnet turned to murder, and found the noose; and while there is romance in the stories I wish to write, my pirates are villains and rogues, living beyond the pale and well outside society.

It hunkers low on the cliffs, low enough that docks have been built - at great trial and error - to moor their ships at. The vessels, and indeed the opening to the cavern, are afforded some protection from the wildness of the open sea by a cove, a small island, and the beginning of the Fortress of Ends. From a distance, the bay provides visual protection, too - much of the light that bleeds from the lair is obscured by the curve of the cliffs. The work was begun by Khaegris, Verdar, Harp and Ptah, and now only Ptah continues to oversee building works, as the clan's chief architect and master of crafts. Upon entering, visitors and residents are instantly shielded from the miserable winds outside, the caverns warmed both by magic and, the further back one goes, hot springs. One of the nature dragons which founded the clan brought a slice of the Behemoth with her; a single, precious seed. Harp concerns herself with tending the sacred tree, which grows in a cavern that seems impossibly vast in the rearmost reaches of the network of caves. A natural stone cathedral, the great tree (grown huge and strong by magic, prayer, and painstakingly crafted shafts to feed the tree with sunlight) is a sight as breathtaking as it is difficult to comprehend. Within the caverns there exists a whole community, not only pirates, but merchants, tavernkeepers, masters of craft of every kind. While it is true that the captains rule here, and that civilized law is not obeyed so much as the law of strength and loyalty, it is far more true than the legends would have you believe to build a life here. The legends, of course, are as lovingly crafted by the dragons that live here as the caverns themselves, but that is a tale for another time... ----- ----- ----- [br] THE RESPITE The island known as the Respite is somewhat of an anomaly, a lonely spit of sand caught between the warmer waters of the Obsidian Coastline and the Southern Sea; the island is temperate, positively warm by the standards of the territories of the Ice god. It is here, now that they hold it, that the dragons of Clan Windfall raise their young, and here that those young step out into the wide world. Trees now grow here, and birds have come with the trees. The island is slowly blooming into beauty under the care of talons that are more disposed to destroy than to create. Even the hardest hearts among the crews find peace and solace here. TERRITORIES

FK8tcf3.png

THE LAIR
Among other things, the citizens of Clan Windfall are possessed of a rapacious apatite for territory. Their current home is a network of caverns, already vast, carved into the side of cliffs somewhere between the Cloudscrape Crags and the Fortress of Ends. The geology seems equal parts ice and stone, the cavern carved by talon as often as dragon fire.

THE RESPITE
The island known as the Respite is somewhat of an anomaly, a lonely spit of sand caught between the warmer waters of the Obsidian Coastline and the Southern Sea; the island is temperate, positively warm by the standards of the territories of the Ice god.

While the clan could not sustain itself if this were its only territory, it is quite possible that the dragons of Clan Windfall would fight more fiercely to protect this place that they have made than the home that sustains them.

The lowest deck before the bilges, the hold (on larger vessels these are separate)

Bilges :
The very lowest part of the hull interior, filled with rocks and other stuff for ballast.

Weather gage: (also weather gauge)
The most advantageous point of sail between two ships, typically in battle. If you hold the weather gage the wind is behind you, pretty much.

Poop (deck):
The aftmost (rearmost) and highest deck of a ship, where the helm (ship’s wheel) is located. In smaller ships it is absent, and the helm is located on the quarterdeck. In ships with a poop deck, the quarterdeck is afore the poop deck, and is the second-highest aft deck.

Windward:
Synonymous with weather (as in weather gage) at times, windward is the direction the wind is coming from. If you are on the windward side of something, it is toward where the wind is coming from. A more common term in use today is upwind. A ship coming from the windward direction is the ship that holds the weather gage.

Leeward:
The opposite of windward, also a’lee. When speaking of islands, the leeward side of the island is sheltered and protected, while the windward side carries the brunt of the weather.

Sheets:
Sheets are not sails, but part of the rigging! They are used to control the lower corners (clews) of a sail.

Shrouds:
Part of the standing (fixed) rigging of a tall ship, the shrouds support the masts. They can be seen prominently on the sides of a ship, symmetrically on both the port (larboard) and starboard sides. The shrouds contain ratlines which sailors use to climb the rigging.

Larboard (port):
Left, but relative at all times to the ship. Standing at the stern and looking forward, the larboard side is always the left side of the ship. Larboard is contemporary to the age of sail, while port is more modern.

Starboard :
Right, but relative as with larboard, at all times, to the ship.

Jonah :
An ancient sailing superstition, weirdly linked to the Biblical hero, but not a good term. A Jonah was believed to be a person who brings bad luck and misfortune upon the crew.
