"Nothing Green Can Stay"
Nature's last green is brown.
Each dying leaf falls down
To be devoured by rot --
Oblivion's our lot.
As day turns into night,
Our wholeness turns to blight
And falls into decay.
Nothing green can stay.
The forest is green
From jungle to electric
The leaves are asymmetric
Starting to decay
The Gladekeeper notices
Something in disarray
The leaves are dying
And the birds are flying
Away
She sees the Plague
And through the haze
She frowns
New plants grow
Where the old were dying
As fresh as newly fallen snow
As the Plaguebringer seethes
The Gladekeeper's leaves
Grow greener
The Plague goes
But Nature knows
It will always return.
Because new life cannot exist without death
and death cannot be without life.
Title: Glory to the Gladekeeper
The Warrior's End
Cypress collapsed to the ground, injured and exhausted. The virus coursing through her had taken its toll and left her body a weak shell of its previous glory. She rolled to her side and coughed, splattering blood across the ground before her. Her mind raced as she felt her life ebbing away. How could it end like this? Hadn't she served the Green Mother well? The dragon had fought so long and hard, dispatching many minions of the cursed Plaguebringer. She devoted her life to stopping the endless tide of rot, death and decay. For what? To end up here, as a carrier for the wretched disease inside her? It seemed too cruel, too unjust.
No. It couldn't end like this. It wouldn't. She would not, could not give in. Cypress struggled to her feet, her legs shaking, struggling to hold her weight. Another heaving cough caused more blood to fall upon the foliage. Her vision blurred. She struggled to focus.
"Be still my child."
What was this? A voice? Cypress was so sure she had been alone in the forest. She left her clan behind to keep the others safe from her contagion. She tried to call out, to warn the other dragon of the sickness she carried, but her throat was too raw.
"Be still child. I know of your condition."
Cypress shook her heavy head. Who was this? She blinked, struggling to bring the world into focus once again.
"I will not repeat myself. You won't be with us much longer, much less if you continue to struggle fruitlessly."
Cypress felt a great weight pressing on her entire body. She couldn't fight it any longer and fell against the ground once more, her breathing growing ragged. She heard a sigh nearly in her ear and felt a reassuring pat between her wings. Panicked, Cypress struggled to kick out, to push the other dragon away from her contagious body. A deep chuckle echoed through the woods, falling lightly into Cypress' ears.
"Do not fret my child, the Plaguebringer has no power over me. You will be by my side soon, for you have served me well these many years. Though your body has succumbed to the corruption of plague, your spirit will prevail.
For you see child, we fight against the rot and decay, but we still depend on it. Though death may temporarily triumph, life will always return. Your death will not be in vain, but will instead feed into the cycle of life."
Cypress coughed, the light fading from her eyes. She blinked again, slowly. At last her heavy lids closed for the final time. As her senses dulled, the smell of fresh soil filled her nostrils. In a moment of clarity, she could feel the insects that turned the rotting plants into rich soil, feel the small creatures that broke down dead animals, all working to replenish the life that surrounded her.
Just before she drew her last breath, Cypress saw a glimpse of a green and brown gnarled tree-dragon before her. Cypress could swear the great dragon wore a smile on her face.
