By designs do you mean skins/accents? Or the different Genes? There's a couple or three different ways to decorate your dragons.
Skins and accents are purchasable things that you aplyrics to the dragon and are like tattoos.
This is an accent:

There are designs that are actually part of their genes and then there are skins and apparel. Click the auction house button on the left and follow the tabs. They'll say food, materials, skins, battle items and other. You can use this to buy things for your dragon as well as buy dragons themselves @crow4
