Oops almost forgot to respond to your suggestion - I did actually give that a try in the scrying workshop before I decided to go with Obsidian/Steel/Obsidian. In my opinion Fire or Leaf Glimmer added too much of one single color, so to me it didn't seem to resemble the skinks quite as much.
