i'm fairly new to this site and wondering if there are any guides or pointers to apparel worth, and skin worth, because i am interested in trying to find pretty things for my dragons but am pretty lost on the concept of what's retired, what's not, and how much said things are worth. i skimmed through a bunch of guides today but there's just so much, so maybe i missed it. :)

Nope, any guide that includes price information would be out of date before it's finished. There's over 3,800 apparel items alone.
There's a few ways to get an idea of what you want for apparel:
Post a dragon or two at a time in Dragon Share looking for apparel/skins and give a range for prices for either individual items or the whole outfit.
Check out the Game Database and sort apparel by color/price. Ancient dragons can't wear apparel so there's no need to sort by breed. Each entry also includes information on whether or not the item is available and where to find it if it is.
You can also sort skins by breed, sex, color and type (player or site). Player accents/skins tend to start at 500g to pay the artist and for the blueprints to make so that's an easy way to separate most of the expensive ones from the cheap ones.
You could browse the Marketplace. Anything in the Treasure Marketplace is likely to be cheap to cheapish. The Gem Marketplace is also available.
After all that you can head to the Auction House to see if people are selling (often cheaper than the Marketplace). You can also sort that by price to only look at what is in your budget.
