TOPIC | What's Largest Color Range in Breeding?
(This question has been answered/solved!)

Just couldn't fit that in the title ^^'

Hey everyone, so... I recently completed a breeding project for my Chocobo fandragon and wanted to celebrate by making a permanent Chocobo breeding pair. The only thing is... I want the largest possible color range/largest variety of color combinations as possible in their offspring. Does anyone know what XXY color combo I should give to the parents to achieve this?

@TemporalRifter You're aware that the color possibilities for offspring take the shortest arc on the color wheel between their parents? Given that it doesn't matter where on it you start as long as the other half of the pair is on the other side. Pick at least one dragon whose colors you like and then see what's on the other side. If you want the widest range possible this spreadsheet shows the furthest colour from each one so you don't have to count color segments: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y6tHIvHR3y2PhtefNKKCcBgJ_LfU_8Z-IofU5_AYBcM/htmlview

I want to live in Theory. Everything works there.

Have you checked the Gem MP for Gene and Breed scrolls before buying an AH listing from me ending in 5g?
@Nightwind
The largest color combo option I could find so far was between a XXY of Maize/Maize/Gold and Pear/Pear/Gold.

Does anyone know if there's a larger combo? Like one that gets all of the colors in a single breeding pair? Or is that impossible?

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. It's not possible to get all the colors because the color possibilities take the SHORTEST route between colors around the circle. That's the reason why there's an odd number of colors.

Since circles have no end and no beginning you can have any color you want on the first dragon and then pick.

To illustrate it another way let's say you have a blackberry tert you want a wide range on. You can either go Blackberry to Metals or Blackberry to Marigold since that's the point at which the longest possible arc switches:

Primary is Blackberry/Metals and Secondary is Blackberry/Marigold.

Does that make more sense?

88 colors is the absolute maximum color range. It is physically impossible to get the entire color wheel in one pair; there are 177 colors in total, and since the breeding system looks for the shortest distance between each color on the wheel, you physically cannot have a wider range than 88. Remember, Pearl and Maize are neighbors, not opposites.

Nightwind included a link to a spreadsheet that shows you the exact opposites of every color on the wheel, so you can easily see what the color ranges would be for each color in each direction. Here's a more simplified one.

The closest you could get to a full-range is either 2 separate pairs, or 1 parent with 2 compatible mates of the opposite colors - for example, a single mother with Maize paired with males of Pear and Mantis respectively would encompass the entire color wheel, although you wouldn't be able to breed them at the same time.
