TOPIC | Do I breed for colours or genes first?
I'm really tired today and feel like I'm missing the obvious answer. I'm trying to breed blood/blood/cantaloupe with metallic/alloy I have one girl: Blood iridescent/sanguine alloy/cantaloupe and two potential mates: Blood iridescent/blood bee/cantaloupe (but also a pearlcatcher) and Sanguine metallic/sanguine alloy/cantaloupe. I can't get the desired result with either mate (no metallic with pearlcatcher, no blood secondary with skydancer) so I was going to breed my female with one of the males and then the resulting child with the other. But do I breed for colours or genes first?

I'm trying to breed blood/blood/cantaloupe with metallic/alloy

I have one girl:

Blood iridescent/sanguine alloy/cantaloupe

and two potential mates:

Blood iridescent/blood bee/cantaloupe (but also a pearlcatcher)

and

Sanguine metallic/sanguine alloy/cantaloupe.

I can't get the desired result with either mate (no metallic with pearlcatcher, no blood secondary with skydancer) so I was going to breed my female with one of the males and then the resulting child with the other. But do I breed for colours or
genes first?

@MurkyDepths I always breed for color first, because you can change genes if you need to, but not colors. ^_^

This is interesting! If you breed for color first, you need to use the PC (otherwise you can't get Blood secondary). This tool gives you an 80% chance of getting a blood/blood/cantaloupe hatchling in any nest, 52% if you want a b/b/c female, and 16% if you want a b/b/c female Skydancer. I'll continue assuming the offspring is a b/b/c female Skydancer.

This hatchling will have Iridescent and either Alloy or Bee (50/50). If it's Alloy, then nests between this hatchling and the male Skydancer have a 28% chance of containing an egg with b/b/c Metal/Alloy. If it's Bee, then 15%.

Overall, this plan (breed with PC until b/b/c female Skydancer, then breed that with male Skydancer) will take 6 breedings to get the female Skydancer, and then on average 5 more breedings to get your final pair (4 if the female's Alloy, 6 if she's Bee). Including the time to grow up, that's roughly a year total.

On the other hand, what if we bred the 'dancers until we got a blood/sanguine/cantaloupe metal/alloy Skydancer female, then bred that with the PC to correct the secondary? There's a 28% chance of getting that Skydancer female in any breeding, and then a 30% chance of getting a b/b/c metal/alloy dragon by pairing that female with the PC (8% if you want it to be a Skydancer). That's on average 8 breedings total, or 8 months, which is faster than the other plan, unless you want a Skydancer as your end result, in which case it will take 17 months–much longer.

IN CONCLUSION:

If you want a b/b/c metal/alloy Skydancer, breed the female with the Pearlcatcher until you get a b/b/c female Skydancer, then breed that with the male Skydancer. It'll take about a year.

If you want a b/b/c metal/alloy dragon and breed isn't important, breed the female with the male Skydancer until you get a blood/sanguine/cantaloupe female Skydancer, then breed that with the Pearlcatcher. It'll take about 8 months.

@WyvernVenom Oh man that's gonna take a while. I better hope for a more fitting partner to come up in the AH. In the meantime I guess I'll try the pearlcatcher first.

Thanks for the math!

@WyvernVenom Holy moly, that's amazing! Do you have a breeding calculator that you use?

@elfin

Yup, it's here! It's a bit old, so I used Cry/Face instead of Met/All (they're the same rarity tier).

The only other math was figuring out the time span, but it's just the reciprocal of the chance (e.g. a 33% or 1/3 chance takes, on average, 3 months because 'dancers have a monthlong cooldown).
