I want to try drawing and/or animating, but all good apps that I know of are pay to use. Does anyone know a good drawing/animating software that is free? I'm tired of alway using MS paint...

Krita is p good! There's lots of different brushes and it has a built-in workspace for frame-by-frame animation! I've been using it for a few months now and it's really good, albeit a complicated. But once you get used to it, it's pretty easy to use c:

I've tried Medibang paint pro, Firealpaca, and Krita, and I liked Medibang the best out of all of them! Its just a personal thing mostly, they're all more or less the same.

Ibis paint X is also really good if you want to use a phone, iPad or something. Thats where I do most of my lining, since my hand-eye coordination is terrible and I can't line for the life of me with my tablet. :')

Krita and FireAlpaca are the best free options for casual drawing tbh. I have a friend that uses GIMP too. i dont do animation often enough to say much about it but these 3 softwares are already a huge improvement over mspaint But remember, going [emoji=pirate ship size=1] on adobe stuff is good praxis :)

Check out GreasePencil. It's a good little 2D tool that comes with Blender, a 3D animation and sculpting program. It's both for drawing and for animation. Plus, because it's still part of a 3D animation program, it's possible to layer things in front or in the back. This is good if you would like parallax or similar.

However, Blender (and by extension GreasePencil) is a fairly complex progran. But it is very popular, so you're bound to find many tutorials that exactly match your needs.

Adding another vote for Krita! It's free as in beer AND freedom!

Spent years drawing in GIMP, though. I'd say GIMP's better for photo-editing and Krita's better for drawing; sometimes I'll paint something in Krita then shift it over to GIMP for color correction.

gimp is really good for photo editing but not great for drawing imo! my favorite free software is definitely krita. it's like a combination of photoshop and paint tool sai. it's a little hard to get used to but overall it's really versatile and i like it! i personally use sai, but that's just a preference!

medibang is really good too!

also since you said "apps", if you're looking for a good phone-based drawing program i'd recommend ibis paint x! there's a free version and it's what i use for phone art :-]
