They feed at sea on small fish and invertebrates. It nests in old-growth forests, which are forests that have lasted for many years without large disturbances that typically contain high levels of biodiversity thanks to their wide variety of ecological niches. It’s nesting behavior, which is considered unusual since most seabirds nest along rocky shoreline cliffs or burrows, has led to it becoming a flagship species for the conservation of old-growth forests. It is threatened by the logging of its nesting habitat.
