Oh deer god. I know that they shed their antlers, and I know the new ones would come back fuzzy. But I didn't know what came afterwards...

Deer are kinda terrifying, because they look like sweet innocent animals that wouldn't eat you.

You're wrong.

First, they have been pretty well documented eating live birds as someone already mentioned.

Secondly, they have been documented scavenging human corpses in a body farm. Shouldn't be that much of a shock since them scavenging other animals is well documented.

And thirdly, a study was done by the University of Michigan where they left deer carcasses out in the woods to see what scavenged them....and you guessed it. Other deer were the first and one of the most common mammals to scavenge them.

Oh, and look up Chronic Wasting Disease in deer if you want to be paranoid. You're welcome.
As for the afterbirth, that's to get back nutrience lost from the pregnancy.
Common misconception, eating the afterbirth has nothing to do with nutrients. I used to believe the same thing, turns out a lot of people do, but my old boss who used to be a sheep herder as well as the manager of a petting zoo for around 40 years, where we had 50+ lambs and goat kids each year, told me the real reason why they do this - and it makes total sense actually. The afterbirth attracts predators. The only reason they eat it is to prevent predators from going after the scent of bloody afterbirth before the foal/fawn/kid/lamb/whatever is able to get up and run away with mom. They don't eat it to stay healthy... well, not getting eaten by a predator is healthy, but you know what I mean. Just figured I'd clear that up lol. We got at least one intern from vet school at the petting zoo every year, and my boss always asked them this question during lamb season. And 9 out of 10 times they thought it was for the nutrients as well. So yeah, very common misconception, but false.
