Back in the good ol' days cake was indeed just a modified version of bread.
Now however in my opinion the basic recipe's just don't have a lot in common anymore.
For cake you use butter/oil, tons of sugar, eggs (and milk).
Bread however is just flour and water with in some cases yeast.
So following the logic that cake is still bread, either cake is just the best incarnation of bread possible or bread is just a very sad piece of cake.
