The weird frames are what gives animation its fluidity. It's called squash and stretch!
Fun Fact:
The reason that Studio Laika's stop motion films look so fluid, instead of the stiffness you get with old stop motion (Year Without a Santa Claus, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc..), is because they made stop motion pieces that mimic animation's squash and stretch, allowing them to have the fluid movement that animation has!
