I have had a leopard gecko for almost a year now, and he is awesome and pretty. He lets me pet him and is generally interactive when i get near his cage. My only problem is that he still tries to run up my arm and escape, so does anyone have any tips to help with this behavior?

@arcticterror Hi there,

I work in the petshop and that usually happens with the geckos I handle. I don't think there is a way to stop/help this behaviour. Their instinct is to climb, so when given an arm, geckos tend to love climbing/running up it.

I agree with Nowair, there's little you can do to stop this behavior. When I worked at a pet store there was a female crested gecko that got really used to handling. She's crawl up my arm and sit on my shoulder. :) It would be a good idea to make sure he can't hurt himself though. If he jumps off your arm a 5' drop would not be good for him!

Any pics of him? I love leopard geckos and I've always wanted to own one!

Nobody wants to tell you why discipline is so important. Discipline is the strongest form of self-love. It is ignoring current pleasures for bigger rewards to come. It's loving yourself enough to give yourself everything you've ever wanted.
Leopard geckos are great animals! Despite the info pet shops may give you, Leos can and do like to climb and explore stuff. If they can get a grip on something, they'll climb it. I used to have a foam background in my tank when I had my old Leopard gecko, and he used to climb up it at night, and he liked to sit on my shoulder when I had him out.

My current Leo likes to think she's a dragon and sometimes sits on the top of her castle tower, she also likes running up arms, climbing across shoulders and down people's backs XD

Ever since I got him as a little fellow he has always tried to climb up my arm and jump off my shoulder, so I try to only handle him in his cage so he won't get hurt. There are just too many places for a sneaky gecko to hide in my apartment, as the only doors are on the bathroom and the one that leads outside. He just thinks he is invincible right now, and it scares me every time he tries to jump off of me. Sometimes he'll calm down after the first try and just be content to walk around on my hands, but I would hate to see the day that he succeeds at running up my arm and jumping off. I've went over his tank I don't know how many times to see if there is just something bothering him and making him want to escape, but I haven't come up with anything yet. He hasn't shown any signs of distress either, so I guess he is just a fearless little explorer.
Edit: I used to get him out and away from his tank when I lived with my mom, and he would do the same thing away from the tank, too.

Maybe my niece calling him a dragon went to his head. He seems content to just be petted, so that's what I've been doing. Maybe when I get a different apartment I can lizard proof a room then, as I do plan on having him a very long time.

Thanks!
