I've been thinking, and although I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon, I've been wondering...
How much do they actually hurt? On a scale of one to ten, one being nothing, ten being the worst pain imaginable? Also, were there any complications you guys had, that might ward me off of being too tempted?
Thank you! ^.^

From what I've learned ( not experience. learned because I might want to get one done when I'm older ) pain generally depends on one's pain tolerance, so pain is subjective. It also depends on where on the body you get tattooed.

You also need to be careful to make sure you're not allergic to any ink. Allergies to red ink is very common in tattoo-ing and many people don't realize they're allergic before they get tattooed.

It's reaaally subjective to the person getting tattooed. I got a new one recently on my inner forearm. It hurt worst over my wrist and inner elbow, I kind of cried a little, but there was a kid who had just turned 18 getting his first tattoo in the next room over. He was getting something really small on his chest over his left pec, which is generally an area that doesn't hurt much, and he had to stop about halfway through the lining and go lay in a dark room with a damp towel on his forehead. He was still laying down when I left.
ETA:
Because I'm proud of how good it looks, this was the tattoo I got

So far it's my biggest one, all the rest have just been smaller, 1-2", or micro tattoos.

Thanks for your reply! I'm not sure quite how much pain I can deal with, but I like to think I've got a high pain tolerance. Needles don't bother me, unless they're in the roof of the mouth, so the idea of the needle wouldn't bother me too much.
Thanks for the charts though. I reckon, if I did dare go along with it, it'd be on the outer arm, near the shoulder. That doesn't seem like a really painful place to get one, but I won't know until I force myself to sit in the chair I guess.

You're welcome! Anywhere that's bony and has little fatty padding generally seems to hurt the most, like the elbows or knees, or shoulder blades.

Some areas just *shudders* I don't think I'd do. The wrists, for one. I heard that the closer it is to the bone, the worse it gets. Poor kid, although I guess it's worth it in the end, once it's all done. ^^
Also, that's cool, I've got to say! Big, but pretty awesome. :3
Edit: My mind was read apparently. XD

I forgot to add that the artist can also have an effect on the pain. My verrry first tattoo, way back when I was a wee kid(19) was a few stars on my other arm. They hurt SO FREAKING BAD because the artist who did them pressed the needle way way too deep and caused serious scarring in dermis. Like to the point where not even a year later the tattoos looked like the kind of thing you'd see on old grandpa types who got their tattoos done 60 years ago on a boat during a war.
They were super cheap so I thought it was a good deal. Don't be tempted by low prices! You're so much better off/less likely to be seriously injured by an experienced artist who probably charges a little more.

Ooh, ouch! Not a very good first experience then @-@
I'll remember that, thank you! I'd rather not end up scarred or have some sort of infection/other complication at the end of it.

I have three (and I really want more!) two simple ones: one only forearm and one on,y outer thigh, and a colored one under my knee on my shin.
I didn't think any of them hurt very much, but I have a weird pain tolerance? I have an OCD disorder where I pull my own hair out (and so I'm pretty desensitized to that kind of pain) and the tattooing felt oddly similar. Like I thought my Monroe piercing hurt worse. :p I had an inexperienced piercing guy though.
My biggest pain advice though is to be really careful after your tattoo is done and it's healing. I accidentally bumped the one on my leg the day after I got it and that hurt worse than any part of the getting it done!

I'm sorry you have that, that can't be a nice thing to have at all. Strangely enough, the idea of getting a tattoo scares me less than having a piercing... I'm just curious about the whole pain thing.
I'll be sure to remember that, and make sure to get it done while I'm off. Then I'd have an excuse to stay still all day. XD
