TOPIC | Sailor Moon Crystal!
@ButterflyFallacy (I read your comments on the first episode and the second episode and...) Can't help but agree with you, why are there so many mistakes like this, was it rushed or what?

Also I would like to add that while watching the transformation scene of Usagi I felt really embarrassed because... I mean look at the original anime, it was so elegant. This one is just really disappointing. It felt out of place, the slow and weird 3d animation - they really plan to use that in all the episodes from now on? Add Usagi's emotionless face to that, I get that it was maybe a bit exaggerated in the original but in the new one she just stares emptily. I think it's probably the eyes that don't convey any feelings, rather than the rest of the face.

(The fight scenes look neat though. Also I like how they gave Ami glasses!)

@punkbird:
They actually DELAYED the release due to animation, so it wasn't exactly rushed but... What exactly did they need the delay for if they release something this poor?

The 3D animation is terrible. It's clunky and sticks out completely. Especially since the original anime was so known for it's gorgeous hand-drawn transformation sequences. These new ones are just terrible. There is absolutely NO reason why they couldn't have done the scene in 2D. And why in the opening do they use it? I have NO CLUE. Again, it's super clunky. (Still saying if they HAD to go with the 3D, why not go with something like Fire Emblem: Awakening's amazing 3D).

The lifeless eyes have a lot to do with the lack of expression, in my opinion. There were a lot of moments where emotion was CLEARLY meant to be expressed, but they relied on the voice actors and kept the animation stiff. This leads to expressive voices but no expressive faces. Again, it's a matter of this is 2014 and it's less expressive then the 90's animation? It makes NO sense.

It just frustrates me that they took the lazy road on this animation. If the music video is any indication, I think the animation will pick up towards the end of the season but that's really no excuse to be lazy about the beginning.

Bumping this to the top because the new episode aired! Let me just say it's pretty darn obvious that the animators favored Rei/Mars over Ami/Mercury because the animation in this episode was gorgeous. No where near the ridiculousness of Ami's episode with the wonky eyes and the missing items. Yes, there still was some animation goofs but... Well, let's just take a moment to FALL IN LOVE WITH SAILOR MARS' TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE AND ATTACK. OMG. I was not prepared. Symbolism??) Okay, Usagi tranforming for no reason to catch up to the bus was just strange. And then apparently Mamoru was too in shock of Usagi's stupid plan to actually follow her. The animation, while still stagnant for quite a few scenes, actually hid it well this time with pretty backgrounds and new locations. Plus fire. Lots and lots of fire. There was also foreshadowing of plots I didn't realize were a thing but I guess they are. Also, this just kind of further pushed more Slash Fics on poor Usagi. I'm not seeing her saying someone is cute/beautiful meaning she wants to frick the frack but apparently that's all you need for some fanficcers. To each their own, I guess. Also, can I say I loved this scene for it's utter ridiculousness: I mean, who hasn't had a day where you're just so embarrassed you smash a cat into your face and then hide under it.

So.... I know this is the Crystal thread and I am watching that. Is anyone watching the original 1990s one? (I... actually prefer dubbed just because I want to watch/listen while doing other things)

and if someone is can you tell me where you are watching it

@ButterflyFallacy My guess is that they first animated Sailor Moon transformation, then Mercury, then Mars, so they gradually got better at it? (I can't decide if I like Mercury's or Mars' better, but I like Moon's the least, for sure.) So maybe we can say Jupiter's will be even better.

So... Rei and Usagi won't fight over taking Mamoru out for a date or something, I hope, in this version? (If I remember right, this was what happened in the original anime? And the whole Umino thing with Usagi...) I haven't read the manga.

@wolfrysk:
I've been thinking about re-watching the original too. I watched bits and pieces to compare to Crystal. I actually really liked the dub. Minus the strange changes they made, it wasn't that bad of a dub. It has it's quirks. I had all the dub on my PC a long time ago, unfortunately, I don't think I have it all anymore.

@punkbird
That's probably true. I think the Fire really helps hide the stiff CG a lot more than the bad CG water or sparkles.

I'm not too sure myself. I know that Usagi and Mamoru really don't fight as much as they did in the original anime.

@punkbird

They shouldn't. Rei has no interest in Mamoru whatsoever in the manga at all. The whole Rei and Jadeite thing is probably an allusion to a piece of artwork Takeuchi did in the manga( linked below) that was never actually elaborated on, part of the manga though some consider it canon.

As for Umino and Naru, they had really small bit roles in the manga, as in almost non-existent if I remember correctly and the anime actually elaborated more into both Naru and Umino as characters than the manga did.

As for the animation, I get the impression that Toei is kind of correcting animation mistakes as they go. The first episode they were simply trying to push it out and might of overlooked mistakes, and as the series progressed since it's on a set schedule and they have more time instead of working toward a deadline they can improve on the animation which it appears they have.

Also, may I mention that the flight attendant thing seemed really random, like, I need to transform into SOMETHING to get on this bus, so, WHY NOT A FLIGHT ATTENDANT, BECAUSE. o-0...

No one has posted since two episodes ago? xD Not much to say about Episode 4: Masquerade. The animation was horrible, the story was basically filler and it just was forgettable. It's too early in the series to try throwing some UsagixMamoru feels. Still, what bothers me about this series is somewhere along the line the animation started off looking like this: But somehow ended up like this: However, these terrible animation glitches were kept in check in Jupiter's episode.
