TOPIC | Sailor Moon Crystal!
I'm just going to Copy>Paste what I posted over on the Wind Flight Board. I was disappointed. First of all, how does an anime made in 2014 look less fluid, less energetic and portray less animation then the original made in 1990s? I mean, just look at these comparisons (specifically the way Usagi walks away). Original: Fluid Movement and Energetic Atmosphere Remake: Static Movement and more colorful yet somehow duller These two side by side REALLY demonstrate how the remake is extremely less energetic: I appreciate they're trying to make this more serious by removing all the overreactions and the chibi shots but replace them with emotion? Like, MOVE USAGI'S FACE A LITTLE. Sheesh. Some of the decisions to drop some storylines (like the Luna introduction) would have been forgiven had they filled that emptiness with some actual character development or new plots but apparently no? I mean, seriously, how long did that first shot last with the planets? I was expecting some audio overlay of background but... NOPE. It was nothing but filler. The animation is so lazy. Compare this to ANY Key or Bones production (or any other anime company, really) and it's sorely lacking. The backgrounds are empty and make the animation seem like a ghost town. At least in the original it was carrying some energy so you didn't notice the lack of background. Here I was just waiting for something to happen and it didn't. Speaking of things that should have happened but didn't... Where was the soundtrack? There were spots where it just felt like a soundtrack SHOULD have been there but wasn't. A great example is the scene where Usagi falls down the stairs. There's this awkward silence. No quirky music? No funny sound effects? Nothing? I appreciated the restyling of Mamoru. I'm not sure if I can pinpoint exactly why I do but his eyes seem to give him a little more life. The original looked like he was in pain all the time. Although I find is kind of ironic that they made him look younger and her look older. Usagi looks the same age as Mamoru. What 14 year old looks like Usagi?! Mamoru looks 19, though. (Overall, I like what they did with Mamoru. They gave him less of an angry edge, which I always thought was out of place in the original. This gives him more of a light hearted nice guy with a secret that matches his Tuxedo Mask Persona. The original just had grumpy cat Mamoru and then SPAZ BALL Tuxedo Mask and it made no sense. So, they did this ONE thing right. Good on them.) The most frustrating bit of all, though, was the HORRIBLE TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE. The original animation was gorgeous. And the remake decides to use CGI?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! And it's not even good CGI like Fire Emblem: Awakening. No, it's terrible, clunky, ugly looking CGI. I found where they used all their budget: FIGHT ANIMATIONS I'm all for rebooting a show to make it more like the manga and make the animation look gorgeous (CARDCAPTOR SAKURA REBOOT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF KERO) but this seems just pointless. It didn't add anything new. If anything, it REMOVED what the original had. I'm going to continue to watch to see what happens but right now, i'm disappointed.

Original: Fluid Movement and Energetic Atmosphere

Remake: Static Movement and more colorful yet somehow duller

These two side by side REALLY demonstrate how the remake is extremely less energetic:

@ButterflyFallacy if I could like a post, it would be this one.

@Jesibeans:
Thanks!
I just have a lot of issues with this reboot so far. D:
No reason Toei Animation should be this bad with a series that was financially backed from the start. I mean, they animate the Pretty Cure series and did the Air/Clannad Movies, so I KNOW they can do better.

Hmm.. Don't really mind the shittenou looking younger but then again they're supposed to be pretty young in the manga. Pretty much all of them are in their teens, early twenties in the manga and zoisite is actually the youngest if going by manga ages. Usagi in general just looks like she did in the manga. The manga version that Naoko Takeuchi drew in general made it look like they were skewed a lot older than they were.

@ButterflyFallacy

Hmm.. A lot of the stuff you disliked was actually stuff I liked about it...

If they're technically going by manga ages then Mamoru is actually right within the right age. In the manga he's probably 17 or 18 since he's a student at Azabu High. I remember finding it odd that Usagi was going out with a guy that was probably 20-21 at the beginning of the anime when she herself was only 14.

In the manga their actual age difference is only 2-3 years which is a lot more palatable, to be honest.

That said artwork wise, I adored the manga art as a kid, spent hours trying to emulate it and everything and it was one of the first things I learned how to draw manga wise so I actually liked the push toward the more manga-ish artwork but with people used to the more animated animation feel I can understand why they wouldn't prefer it. I actually liked that reactions weren't over- extended, over emphasized because I honestly didn't think it suited the atmosphere they were trying to achieve.

I also think they kind of downplayed it because in the manga they fall in love within the first 3 acts before they ever discover each other's identities, versus the very extended time that it took in the original anime. They alluded to that in crystal, the heart pounding scene but in the original she mostly just appeared ****** off and annoyed without the aforementioned heart pounding with it as well.

That said, I actually didn't mind the lack of music and actually preferred it because it allowed me to focus a bit more on certain aspects rather than having a music cue in the background telling me what emotion I was supposed to have as well.

I also loved the watercolor backgrounds personally because art wise I just found them really pretty, plus it reminded me of old cell backgrounds back when they were all hand painted. That said, I did find it amusing that action background scenes, I.e the arcade the background people were static.

Also, wasn't a fan of the CGI transformation sequence.

@Vergil ...I kind of hope you don't mean Usagi's because it's the same woman from the original? She sounds the same.

@Yupei actually looking at screencaps and I can see where you're coming from wrt: the watercolor look on the backgrounds. It is actually really nice and kind of works for that shojo-manga feel.

Overall, yeah, I mean, it's not perfect but nothing is, but still excited neverless. I'm kind of sticking with a friend who is like 'I can't compare it to the original, I'm just going to meet this on its own terms.' So back to waiting and seeing.

to be honest, i wasnt expecting much. what i loved about the original anime were the use of colors, flashy transformation sequence and sound effects, and just overall lighthearted feel. it was pretty evident early on that these aspects would be completely changed. ill still keep watching, though, and see how it goes! chibiusa is my main girl, i hope we get to see her eventually. (ON ANOTHER NOTE, MAMORU IS WAY TOO ATTRACTIVE)

That is why we live like heathens
Stealing from the trees of Eden
Living in the arms of freedom
And everything we touch is evil
@jesibeans yeah. I don't expect it to be the same as the original and I agree it's not perfect but I liked it for what it was.

Also, @vergil you didn't mean usagi, right? That's the same voice actress as the original, and the only one from the original cast. The rest of the seiyuus were changed.

I know I'm a little late in this discussion.I just started watching Sailor Moon Crystal. I prefer the old Sailor Moon with the crazy face expressions. I'm on the 4th manga book.

Perhaps you've seen it,
maybe in a dream.
A murky, forgotten land…
It seems a lot of people are a little all over the place with the episode regarding everything. XD We'll just have to see how things go on when the next episode shows up! Twelve more days!!

But, I think there is ONE thing we can all agree on....

MAMORU GOT REALLY HOT.

I THINK @ButterflyFallacy HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD AS TO WHY.

It totally explains why I always preferred Manga Mamoru to Anime Mamoru.

Manga Mamoru also had better fashion sense. Seriously, the mustard shirt with the purple cuffs, I don't even...

As sun's distant light, echoes down to dreams below
Know you will wake, on winds rise again
For this journey's end is but one step forward to tomorrow."
