Also here are a few quick tips from a newbie to my fellow newbies:

"Gather Items," and "Pinkerton's Plunder Pile" (under Trading Post) for free daily stuff

Check your Flight's forum board, there are lots of dragon giveaways for newbies

Play the Coliseum versus monsters for more stuff (best grinding dragons are one with scratch ability, and you put ability points in 4:2:1 strength/quick(until 46)/vit(until 20) per level, and @ lvl7 get the Eliminate ability stone)

"Crim's Collection Cart" under the Trading Post can be a quick way to get some treasure daily; check the Auction House for the items they're asking for and see if you can buy for less than Crim is paying

Check the AH for prices of some of the stuff you pick up in the coliseum, then sell for profit (some don't sell for any more than the price you get direct from your inventory though)... you can also check forum boards to see if anyone is buying certain stuff like food, mats, etc that you don't need
And here's a masterlist of more in-depth guides.
Edit: Food items you should NOT convert (valuable for swipp's swap/selling on AH)
And here's a similar guide to swipp stuff

This species of Jadevine appears shriveled during the day and opens during the evening to absorb moisture.
55
7
(arc/shdw)
Crimson Jadevine
Plant
Crimson Jadevine is extremely rare and usually crushed up to make war paint for battleworn dragons.
55
7
(fire/plg/wat)
Sunkernel
Plant
Sunkernels are the smallest type of acorn, and are commonly harvested and eaten in handfuls rather than individually.
55
5
(lt/wat/wind)
Lucky Star
Plant
The extremely rare eight leaf Lucky Star is said to bestow good luck for life. Unfortunately, this isn't one.
15
2
(arc/ice/ltg)
Juneflower
Plant
A popular flower of two tones. Bushels of Juneflower are used in garlands and necklaces for summer solstice celebrations.
50
5
(arc/ice/shad)
Black Tulip
Plant
The comfort food of heart-broken veggie-dragons.
50
5
(nat/shdw)
Sand Creeper
Plant
This species of ivy can blanket whole swaths of sand. Even when culled, it seems to reemerge out of nowhere.
75
5
(ltg/plg/wind)
Manaweed
Plant
While Manaweed supposedly gives Satin Mice their peculiar intellect, it doesn't make dragons any smarter.
20
2
(arc/fire)
Gradish
Plant
Gradishes are red because they're good for the heart.
55
6
(ltg/nat/shdw)
Wisp Fruit
Plant
This fruit is light, airy, and tasteless.
22
2
(coliseum)
Cindershroom
Plant
Though the spores of the Cindershroom indeed look like smoldering cinders, it's mostly harmless.
20
2
(fire/wind)
Stonewatch Scrub
Plant
Chewing this plant will dye your teeth blue.
41
4
Maidens Blush
Plant
It remains unknown if the origin of the name comes from the color of the flowers, or the slight toxicity that can raise a dragon's temperature.
60
6
(arc/fire/nat)
Insects
White Cabbage Butterfly
Insect
Caution: Excessive consumption of this butterfly may cause cabbage farts. Think of your den mates.
25
3
(earth/lt/wind)
Vibrant Prickly Insect
Insect
Females of this species are able to reproduce parthenogenetically when a suitable mate is not available.
70
8
(arc/fire/ice/wat)
Runic Pug Moth
Insect
In a flash of green light this moth expires. The runic symbols emblazoned on its wings mark it as another dragon's familiar! Better hide the evidence...
60
7
(arc/ltg/nat)
Vampiric Featherflea
Insect
The featherflea buries its head deep, nearest to wing joints. The amount of flying the host partakes in creates a smorgasbord of rich blood.
41
4
Meat
Herdbeast Hoof
Meat
The split hoof of a grazing creature. Large ones like this make excellent parchment weights.
15
4
(coliseum)
Olive Sea Snake
Meat
This snake is named not for its color, but rather for its curious love of olives.
25
3
(ice/wat/wind)
Coral Snake
Meat
The bright coloring of the Coral Snake warns of its potent venom. Devour them carefully.
25
3
(fire/ltg/plg)
Onyx Cobra
Meat
The venom of an onyx cobra can cause the onset of a gembond in dragons. It is wise to give them a wide berth. (KS Sponsored by Opal.)
55
7
(arc/fire)
Opal Cobra
Meat
Cobra Attack! (KS Sponsored by Opal.)
55
7
(ice/lt/shad)
Emerald Striker
Meat
The emeralds are not gems, but reserves of venom; a glittering disappointment. (KS Sponsored by Opal.)
55
7
(nat/plg/wind)
Amethyst Striker
Meat
After consuming the bitter flesh, dragons will often disagree whether to preserve the hide or pick out the glittering gems. (KS Sponsored by Opal.)
55
7
(earth/ltg/wat)
White-Eared Hummingbird
Meat
The name alone has sparked many arguments over whether or not birds really have ears.
25
3
(fire/plg/wind)
Crow
Meat
Let them eat crow.
55
6
(earth/nat/shad)
Duskrat
Meat
The days are much too bright for the Duskrat, thus they only come out at night.
20
2
(fire/ltg/shad)
Java Sparrow
Meat
Known for staying awake for days on end, the Java Sparrow is an excellent source of energy.
15
2
(arc/plg/wat)
Nightwing Bat
Meat
The Nightwing once nested with a darker, more cunning species of bat. That other species is now extinct.
20
2
(arc/ltg/wat)
Magpie
Meat
Magpies are hunted for both their meat and their amazing collections of shiny things.
55
6
(ltg/wat/wind)
Seafood
Umbral Catfish
Seafood
These tiny catfish school in shaded ponds. Direct contact with sunlight cause the fish to change color and expire.
23
2
Bluemoon Dartling
Seafood
Dartlings are able to weather droughts by burying deep into the ground and forming a mucus cocoon. They can survive in this hibernation state for up to three years.
41
4
Crowntail Surgling
Seafood
Its flared fins can be used to intimidate larger fish; pity this skill doesn't work on dragons.
27
3
Crowntail Wanderer
Seafood
Once bred to produce brilliantly colored, decorative fins, an accidental reintroduction to the wild sees these jewels migrating to new territories.
29
3
Lyretail Puffer
Seafood
These fish are susceptible to parasites and will rub against rough surfaces to remove them. On the positive side, a dragon standing still in the water will find them easy to catch; on the negative, the parasites are easy to catch too.
