The 2.1 Visual Familiars Guide is here!

In this update 8 arbitrary categories are created in addition to anue's original Festival Familiar category.

Highlights of update 2.1

Humanoid familiars aren't grouped together as one category. Instead they are clustered at the end of their respective categories: Water Creatures, Insect-looking, Birdy, Other Furry Creatures, or Scaly Things.
Water Creatures also include swampy creatures like croakers from the mire and skinks from the alchemist lab.
All the snake looking creatures and invertebrates with shells are in the Scaly Things category regardless of whether they actually have scales.
Bats and trunkers and aardvarks are in the Other Furry Creatures category although they aren't particularly furry. This is because the Other Furry Creatures used to be called Other Mammal-ish Creatures.
Plants and humanoid plants are at the end of the Canines & Felines & Plants category mostly because of the florons.

This kind of innovation is exactly why I suggested reserving several posts right at the start. I love it ^_^

However, this new grouping separates cockatrices and basilisks - both are winged scaly things, and the original cockatrice and basilisk are but recolours of the same line art. I wouldn't know myself which category to put them in.

Well, it's your thread now, and I won't meddle with it. You've done a terrific job so far. Good luck, and may your enthusiasm never ebb :)

Edit: Okay, one last suggestion: a catch-all category called Chimaeras. You could dump everything in there that looks like it belongs in at least two different categories. Buttersnakes, for example, are scaly, but have insectoid wings. Cockatrices, basilisks, chimeras, manticores, and the hippogriff-type creatures are a given, ophiotaurs probably too. Serpentas and capricats also kind of look like they'd belong there.

I found it a bit curious that Masked Phantom and Veiled Vision are in the Birdy category. Yeah, they have beaked masks, but they seem the undead type. Cat golems and horse golems also kind of fit the bill for the Objects & Dead Things category.

I promised to leave the thread to you, but the new grouping is just giving me ideas and I can't help it xD It is, of course, entirely up to you if you want to implement any of this. I swear I'll stop bothering you now x)

@anue Thanks for the suggestions! After reading through it I have tried moving things around and put together a tentative chimaera group. However, I think the visual effect of this group doesn't flow as smoothly as the original groups. My current criteria used to group familiars is their visual appearances. Taxonomically speaking, I classify things together only based on morphology XD so my taxonomy separated many familiars that are "genetically" related, such as the cockatrices and basilisks and chimeras. I grouped them that way because I think the new cockatrices are ~70% serpent looking, the old cockatrice and new basilisks are ~80% bird looking, and the chimeras are mostly (hoofed) mammal-looking. One solution that I could think of is to have a text based index of a "phylogenetic nomenclature" at the first post. I might even make an evolutionary tree of chimeras based on their releasing time and post the link with that index when I got time XD P.S.
