as someone who dislikes capsule specifically, i've never understood why people are so insistent on not having a basic tert? like i understand that it can make the dragon feel unfinished and pretty much ruin the chance for its offspring to get any tert, but if a tert is just truely unworkable, is it so horrible to leave it basic? esp if the dragon isn't for breeding anyway?
edit for clarity: often when i'm in dragon search looking for advice on a difficult tert, i get suggested capsule as a 'last resort' and see people referring to it as a tert that always works if nothing else does, and because i fond capsule unappealing, it is at the front of my mind when wondering as to why its so important that a dragon has a tertiary gene.
another edit just cause: this is the dragon that got me wanting to get opinions on this, she's a progen kid so she overrides my opinions about buying/keeping dragons with difficult terts, and though there are full combos i don't hate for her, they all work better on her similarly colored brother and i've gotten rly attached to her as a little strawberry baby

My coli trainer was the very first derg I ever bought on the AH and his tert is just. AWFUL. Completely unsalvageable. Every time a new tert gene comes out I scry him with it, but he was born basic and I think he will just need to remain basic until the end of time and sometimes, that's just how they gotta be XD
Edit:

I mean, I've left terts basic even when they were very good! And then there are other dragons where I've used the tert even though I'm sure plenty of other people would consider it horrible… it really just depends on the dragon. [emoji=ridgeback happy size=1]
But to answer the base question, no, it's not horrible at all, in general! However, if someone really doesn't like leaving terts basic, it might feel horrible for them, and that's fine, too.

IDK, it just feels like basic is the filler, and having basic genes makes it feel incomplete. I'm a completionist and a minimalist :p

i feel like it's a sense of completion for a lot of people, that sense of something missing becomes a dealbreaker and bothers them too much to have in their lair. for me not so much, i don't mind basic terts but i won't often buy a new g1 to leave with a basic tert unless its primary and secondary are *perfect*. i'm a big fan of matchy xyzs so i like finding weird color matches so that's my prerogative.
but that means more cool dragons for people who have no inhibitions on leaving terts basic! in the end it's your dragons and you can and should do what makes you happy with them, regardless of popular opinions on how to gene dragons. and there's plenty of dragons for everyone to gene as they see fit.
tbh i've long believed they should change the name of "basic" to something with a less dismissive connotation. like. "solid/solid/hidden" or something idk

I've had dragons who are
fully basic, actually! As well as many with basic terts (
x ,
x ,
x for example), because sometimes the tert is just Ugly. If I'm the one who's going to be looking and admiring them the most, why would I waste the extra money on capsule or spines when the dragon looks fine without it?

I mean, maybe people put capsule on their dragons because they like capsule? It's my third favorite tertiary and the most applied tertiary in my lair overall. I don't really understand what that has to do with basic tertiaries, since your wording sort of implies people only put genes on their dragons out of necessity.
If basic works better in any slot, I keep it basic. But with the amount of tertiaries these days and wild accent colors on primaries and secondaries, almost no dragon of mine has a basic tertiary anymore.
i only have one with a basic tertiary i intend to keep basic, and that's because it would mute the primary and secondary.
She's here.
edit: also, yeah that makes it make sense now; I've just never heard of capsule as a tertiary saver, usually it's like, firefly, stained, spines and lately soap. Then again, I don't frequent drs like i used to.

It's not horrible at all, a ton of people do it, especially g1 collectors. It's fairly normal
I am not one of those people
I am a g1 collector, so I paid for the whole dragon, I'm gonna use the whole dragon /j
In all honesty, it feels like a waste, because I could have used those funds on a dragon I liked better and would make use of the tert. They'll always be incomplete to me and having a basic tert gives me an almost physical itch when I think about them and the only reason I haven't sold my two basic terts is because I'm holding out hope that a perfect gene is released one day (didn't like the gene plan of one after buying it but too cute to resell and the other was a birthday hatch I scattered into current colors). Its a major dealbreaker for me
Basic primaries and secondaries don't bother me at all though because then you at least still see the color, and there's a simplicity that just works best for some dragons
This is a wholly personal feeling however. If anyone else has basic terts, good for them! I'm glad they like their dragons as is. I won't look down on tertless dragons. I just do not want them in my lair because it makes me uncomfortable and mentally itchy
