I may be wrong, but I think it works if it's in your Vault as well. I got mine from that, if I remember correctly. I have one from the first NotN...which is where that meme comes from, lol. Everyone thought that putting one (or multiple) Strange Chests on the AH before the event ended would keep it from disintegrating...obviously not.
