Here's to hoping that the new ancient is a chubby guy, regardless of if he's an animal or a bug or whatever

If I had to guess, genuinely why we're seeing less variation in body size. I'd imagine it has to do with space, because ancient breeds all have line breaking genes, if they made one that was very round it would also impact how the genes could work with them. For instance if they made something like a snapper they'd have to do a lot for any sort of gene that stands away from the body. We already have the problem with things like branches getting squished looking on
Example:

of course I still think we should have body variation!I just wanted to provide an explanation from another perspective.

I do hope the next ancient can be a built bulkier or chubby! It gives me that feeling, but we will see what happens.

oh also I know this wasnt in the original post but I disagree with the concept that fr designs need to be LESS chimeric, bc like, thats a good thing I think! "dragon" is a state of mind and while im not asking for like...monhun yama tsukami (like I werent complain if we got that tho), I think since FR had imperials from minute one and eastern dragons are inherently chimeric, they have opened the doors to all cultural concepts of Dragon and therefore putting a ton of animals in a blender and making a dragon out of it is exactly what I think they should be doing! it just, also needs to be thickset. or at the very least, a different shape--I think I've said before but something dorsally or laterally flattened like a ray or fish would be extremely welcome for me
basically I know im a broken record about the nine resemblances of the dragon? but fr invoked imperials so they need to COMMIT, give everyone camel faces. im being mooostly facetious in that specific detail but
and I will add here my pet theory that they had been designing the next modern, and it like, is a thickset dragon maybe (and also nature), and they were like. okay we have this one so lets make some skinnier ancients. like THEY know about this design but I/we do not

what mostly drives me nuts is the fact that there are so many large reptiles that could be easy inspiration for a unique but still obviously 'draconic' breed but we keep getting noodly mammal inspired designs. where are the low-to-the-ground and armored croc inspired dragons? where are the bulky ornithischian inspired dragons? frilly and elaborate iguanas, top-heavy pterosaurs, lumbering turtles ... i love most of the dragon breeds we have, don't get me wrong, but many of them don't feel very dragon-y. i would really love to see staff take inspiration from more chunky reptilian body shapes. i've been in the furry fandom for a long time and have been around many closed species, and the most popular and "safe" body plans are skinny and mammalian. it's not necessarily a bad thing but i wish we had more dragons who look like dragons

the same face syndrome has bothered me ever since aethers came out, it's like disney. big eyes and cutesy nose. totally agree with this (although personally, i do disagree with the undertide-eel point, i think staff did a really good job with that face).

Yeah I'm not a big fan of snappers, the pose and several of their features don't really do it for me! I wish there was something more like the very traditional dragons you see in old (but not super old) illustrations and pop culture. They're like the most default archetype of dragons to me and it's a shame there's nothing like them on the site:

100 PERCENT YES i want this so badly !!! i really would like to see some more traditional, retro dragons, like from disney's golden/silver ages-type (lookin' at you, black cauldron). nicolas marlet is probably my fav example (httyd mention) but you can do a lot to make dragons traditionally toothy-spiky-scaly while still retaining a bit of charm!

obv i understand you can't translate marlet's pen/linework over to a site like this, but i still argue you can keep a majority of their characteristics.

This new breed looks promising, if it's similar to a pangolin or an isopod it could have a pretty unique shape. Here's hoping! I definitely wanna see more variety. (To be honest, I kinda wish Aethers had a more mothlike body shape to go with their theme, haha.)

Marlet is my biggest argument for this. A few people are suggesting that there's less visual interest to anything outside of this snake shape but his dragon designs have a huge amount of variation in shape and all of them are extremely dynamic.

So the new guy does break this mold (if not in a super unusual way)

I am relatively satisified with the new dragon, but I definitely would still like to see some chunky dragons in the future - maybe for the next release.
