I've been poking around the Encyclopedia, looking at the lore to see what I can use to make my own lore as accurate as possible to cannon.
Whilst reading, I've noticed that some dragons have surnames others don't. Modern breeds seem to have surnames a majority of the time, whereas Ancient breeds mentioned seem to not.
Structure is the following:
FLIGHT
SURNAME - SOURCE
Lightning
Thundrael - Ten Eyes
Craklinne(?) - Workplace Hazards
Wind
Reedwing - Ten Eyes
Nature
Petalhide - Ten Eyes
Arcane
Crystalon - Ten Eyes
Plague
Spinehearth - Ten Eyes
Marrowbite - The Seed and The Sickness
Light
Sunspark - Ten Eyes
Shadow
Blotburrow - Ten Eyes
Ebonhide(?) - Ancient Fascinations
Fire
Lavala - Ten Eyes
Smoak - Temper, Temper
Maggmaw - Temper, Temper
Water
Deeplake - Ten Eyes
Earth
Rockbreaker - Ten Eyes
Ice
Frostkeen - Ten Eyes
Freezeclaw - Jailbreak
Rimeshank - Jailbreak
It seems like most cannon dragon surnames are two words, or a mix of two words.
(Freeze + claw = Freezeclaw, Crystal + Talon = Crystalon)
Some are a bit hard to tell if they're surnames though - Craklinne and Ebonhide are not named by a forename, so it's difficult to tell (based on the listed naming conventions) if their mentioned names are forenames or surnames.
Just thought I'd share my findings and see what other people think on the matter. (Do feel free to share your own lore if it follows this cannon idea of surnames though, I'll be happy to read it!)
