I've had some chests which gave me stuff which was more valuable than what I'd gotten if I had sold it.
But I've also had chests which I might should have sold - but yeah, you never know in advance.
I do open them always though, because rare familiars, rare apparel - treasure AND gems.

My understanding is that it's technically better to sell them, but I always open them. I didn't spend who knows how long clicking buttons to NOT open my shiny box!
