I decided to write something for this, enjoy. Also I'm including Lesbians deal with it. It had been a normal day, your clanmates giving you and your mate time to spend with your new nest, 3 beautiful and healthy sparky eggs. Your mate had been particularly excited to welcome children of her own into the world, you’d been together for years but only now found both the suitable male and the right time. You’d never thought that anything bad could happen to your eggs, but even you could be wrong. It started about 3 days into incubation, one of your eggs glowing less than their siblings, you didn’t think anything of it. You’d come to regret that. Your mate’s shriek of distress drawing you out of a novel you’d been reading. The egg had fractured suddenly leaving nothing but a blackened and empty shell, you both mourned that night, wondering what you could have done differently, if you could have saved your child. It had happened so quickly that no one could have been called to help even if you realized what was going to happen. The next egg started to dim the next day, you called for your clanmates, but no one knew what to do, and you watched helplessly as your child died in both of your claws. You only had one egg left and you desperately hoped that they would survive. You contemplated your situation, wondering why this had happened. The Skydancer had seemed nice enough, he had offered to sire your hatchlings after all, but there had been something odd about how he had vanished almost immediately after the eggs had been lain. And you had never gotten a look at his eyes. Your contemplations stopped abruptly when you heard the sound of cracking, panic overtook you as you rushed to your mates’ side, but relief soon came as you saw that you had only forgotten the days, small claws breaking through the shell. You would never forget her siblings that didn’t make it, but for now it was time to meet your new daughter.

I had never wanted eggs. I'm young, too young for eggs. I had barely come of age, and my parents and clan would look down on me and cast me away if they found out. The father was a handsome Imperial, and he loved me with all his heart, or so he said. We we're both young, we didn't know this would happen, and we weren't even mates. He left when he found out that there were eggs, saying that he was sorry and he couldn't hamdle the news. I couldn't see a sign of remorse on his face as he left. I laid the eggs far away, where I knew nobody could find them. I left them there, cold. I wanted them to die. I couldn't come back to the clan with a hatchling, they would all chase me away and scorn me. I didn't want to be rejected again. Not by my own clan, home, family. Not again. Two weeks after I laid them, I came to check if they had rotted. One of them had. To my surprise, the sight of the rotted egg left me choking, tears flowing out of my eyes, staring at horror at the rotted egg yolk lumped inside the greyed shells. I didn't know dead eggs looked like this, I didn't know that they would make me feel so horrified. I was a bad mother. I had abandoned the eggs I should have taken care of, loved with all my heart, then raised with care. I hugged the live egg tightly, staring at the dead eggshell, crying. The pain in my heart was much more than I expected. I didn't want this egg to die as well, and i knew what i had to do. I hid the egg under my wing and sneaked back into my den, packing all my stuff, making sure nobody saw me. Then, I stole my mother's egg sling to carry the egg properly. I knew stealing was wrong, but i had no choice. I took one last look at the clan, tears in my eyes. After that, I flew off into the sky, the egg in its sling, by my side. I didn't look back, because i knew that I would change my mind if I did. I never saw my clan again. But now at least I have my beautiful son with me, even if his sibling is gone. I will never regret it.

the default water eggs already freak me out, some barnacles burrow into a host leaving holes in the flesh and i cant help but think they're specialised parasites given that they seem to appear on every egg without fail.

honestly, my headcanon for dead plague eggs is that the embryo got too big for the shell, and the baby was strangled in its metaphorical crib, or maybe it ran out of yolk, or was just too weak to claw its way out. When i look at the shriveled 'raisin eggs' i see a dead baby dragon who got so close, but not far enough. Imagine being the parent who got back to their nest a little too late to find their hatchling near-dead by suffocation in their egg membrane, scratching, clawing, and wailing weakly in its parents palms while the parents are unable to do anything but sob and coo softly to their baby.
