I personally remove genes all the time, especially for my fan dragons. I like accuracy > prettiness when it comes to making fan dragons, I strive to make them look exactly like who they're based on.

I also just like basics because a triple gened dragon w/ apparel is super busy to look at and I like simplicity. Simple dragons are also easier to draw, I'd cry if I had to draw a cry/face/glim with apparel, I already find drawing a basic dragon hard enough.

@Scarfsickle sometimes basic can be really beautiful, and sometimes there havent been a gene released which fits the dragon. For me its the latter. I have several basic dragons which are waiting for the right gene. I've removed genes before, some dragons look better with basic. Also, basic is much more accent-friendly.

@Scarfsickle I remember only ever removing one gene from a dragon, and that was Marie back when I bought her. She had Crackle, and in the words of JonTron, "I ain't havin' nunnathat". She has Glimmer now, but dear god did she look better without that awful Crackle making her look like a mess.

I also have a Basic/Basic/Underbelly dragon who's always been that way, but I don't really plan on changing her. I don't feel like any genes really suit her, and she'd look way too busy, what with her apparel and accent.

I'm the kind of person who tries to find any way he can to make all genes usable, but if it clutters a dragon, or ruins an otherwise pretty dragon, then I either remove that gene or keep it basic.

In her case, any other primary would ruin the fan dragon so I'm content to leave her and her nearly identical mate alone.

I guess they just liked them more that way, or basic gene looked better in certain combination, or planned to change genes later and couldn't stand looking on a dragon with some gene that annoyed them, so removed it.

As many people, as many tastes, and what is pretty for one person may be awful for another. It's not uncommon that people buy a dragon just for some particular color combo and change their breed and genes. Nothing to be bothered with.

It could also be a fandragon that looks more accurate without the genes.

I got a crystal/facet/circuit Midna dragon that looks much more accurate to the character with her primary as basic, as that color has a 2-tone effect with basic, but not with crystal.

Also ACCENTS could be a major factor too, I've seen some accents that pop and look fabulous on basic.
