I wanna catalog every single piece of inspiration of Mythological ideas in this fine site. So that more people can learn about the fascinating things that went into this site! I'll start with an 2 well known ones and a pretty obscure one! The Imperials are clearly based on eastern dragons of Asian descent, but with the addition of wings. The Coatl breed is based on Quetzalcoatl, a Mesoamerican god, and like the Imperials the coatl have added limb attached, but legs instead of wings. A slightly more faithful homage to the god are the Amphithere familiars. [Item=Ringlet Amphithere][Item=Ultramel Amphithere] And a slightly more obscure one is the Croakers. They are based on the Llamhigyn Y Dwr or Water Hopper for non-Welsh speakers or those who are confused with the name [s]Like me[/s] As stated before they are from Welsh mythology and have venomus stingers n the point of their tails and would strike people down with their ugliness. This is a good enough place to start for this thread, If you know of any others please list them with a brief description and hopefully a picture of the myth. I look forward to the wonderful things you post!

There are also regions that think of these three gods as parent and child, and brother weasels."

@TheBlackMage I'm glad you brought up the inspiration of the Coatl. There is a lot of interesting and sometimes obscure lore on this site :D. Here's a little bit of the lore that I've noticed: The Foo familiar is a callback to the Chinese Foo Dog (or to some, a Foo Lion). These were guardians who protected people from evil spirits. One of the fun tidbits about this creature was that you could always tell which one was female or male, in architectural terms at least. The male held a globe, the female held a cub. In the picture above, the Foo Dog is a female. On the site, the Tengu is supposed to be a Talanok that went insane after delving too deep in the dark sides of the arcane. In Japanese culture, the Tengu was a territorial mountain woodland spirit, that harassed and tormented travelers, or on rare occasions helped them depending on the situation. They were also very adept at swordsmanship. The last one I'd like to point out, is the Pearlcatcher, which I believe has a fair bit tied to the Chinese dragon as well. Chinese dragon lore is quite diverse: in some lore (unless I'm remembering incorrectly, or the source was wrong) some of them actually had wings, their power would be dictated by how many toes they had, etc. However, one thing that came up rather consistently was the pearl. It was said that the fiery pearl was what allowed the dragon to fly, and in some cases the dragon would carry the pearl underneath a fleshy pouch in their throat. I believe the developers tried to emphasis the dragon's relation to the Chinese dragon by, like the Imperial, putting whiskers on the Pearlcatcher; another connection to the Chinese dragon.

@Arivern These are very good ones, I can't believe I missed the relationship with the Foos. I like the pearlcatcher and Asian dragon relation, tis something i didn't know. I believe I should share something that is a bit of a stretch. In the Coatl description it states that Coatls are very vibrant and colorful. In Aboriginal folklore a story of a Rainbow Snake can be found, though it is said to have hair instead of feathers.

"Solas, have I ever wanted to hear one of your endless explanations? Ever."
@TheBlackMage

Huh, interesting; it could be that the developers were combining the Aboriginal and Mesoamerican legends to come up with the Coatl, so as to avoid some misinterpretation or disrespect problems. One of the issues this site had was apparently naming the Serthis "Naga"; Naga are Indian dragons that served as mounts for gods such as Vishnu. Naga were/are very revered, and apparently some people didn't particularly like the violent, cut throat Beastclan named after a very respected piece of mythology and religious significance.

Though it's mostly about myths and legend, I feel as though a particular exceptions should be made for this [Item=Nebula Floaters] The Nebula floaters are a small reference to the [s]fake[/s] Atmospheric Jellyfish in name only. Next is the Baku and Dream eater duo. Both are based on the Baku, a Japanese spirit who would eat dreams of people. A 17th century baku would only protect against disease and evil, but later ones would eat dreams. It is said that if a child would wake up from a nightmare, they could chant "Baku-san, come eat my dream" three times and then the Baku would come and eat the nightmare, thus allowing the child to sleep peacefully. But if the Baku isn't full, then it would also eat the hopes and deires of the child, and cause them to grow up with an empty life.
