Dragon Name: Undine
Pronouns: She/Her
Breed: Bargheist (Imperial)
Rank: Mirror Jumper
Undine was only a child when her life fell apart. She lived in the mountains: a small, snowy village unremarkable in all ways except one.
Cover the mirrors at night. Never open the doors. Keep the beast away.
Keep it out, at any cost.
Alabaster was its name. The white wolf, the mirror-beast, the horror that lurked in the space between worlds, always waiting, watching. Undine did not know better. She hadn’t
meant to leave the mirror uncovered, she was going to tell someone, truly, but she didn’t want them to yell at her and be so afraid, and she was a big kid now, big enough to deal with it on her own… and then it was simply too late.
The next morning found her alone, scarred and bitten. Her parents were gone, crushed by the thing’s massive jaws. She could not bear to look back at her village… it was better not to know what had happened, what her mistake had unleashed. It was better, in fact, not to know anything at all. For who could truly love her? She, the purveyor of misfortune, the mistake. She, who even now in her grief could feel something horrible waiting beneath her skin?
And so Undine became very good at hiding. Fake smiles; a laugh here and there, or the brush of a wingtip, perhaps, and suddenly all the questions seemed to fade away. “How are you?” was the surest way to cast aside any concerns, and fine jewelry served well to cover up the scars.
Undine was loyal, of course, courteous and kind — everything her parents had taught her to be. She was just a little bit…
more. She was sad, though she hid it so carefully. And she was…
dangerous, as well. There was something monstrous in her now; something that turned every little movement into an invitation and made her scales bristle at the sight of an exposed neck. Something that came out most when the moon was full. Something that showed itself when she was at her weakest, and turned her memories into bloodstained smudges.
Undine is much better at combat than she lets on. Though she looks unassuming and demure, she’s trained herself in most weaponry, with a preference for long distance and mobility. She can handle rapiers, pikes, clubs, and the occasional improvised weapon, though she dislikes working with swords (too clumsy) and daggers (too awkward). She is generally too weak to effectively use heavy objects, but not so much that she can’t handle them at all. Her magic is mostly consumed by her curse, but she can do minor hydrokinesis (not enough to hold anything), and slight illusory magic (noticeably ethereal, draws power from water)
As a Bargheist, Undine can transform into a massive Portuguese water dog at nighttime. However, she cannot retain her reason in this form: at best, she can point out people she does or doesn’t want to hurt, at worst, she becomes completely uncontrollable. Both her shapeshifting and her mental stability become harder and harder to control as the moon gets fuller. Additionally, Undine has the ability to jump through reflections. There are no real limits to her power, so long as the reflection she jumps into is big enough for her and the one she wants to exit out of isn’t covered. She cannot jump across entire continents, but has a
very large range. Jumping is easier at night. She is known to be able to conjure reflective surfaces on any body of water deeper than an inch, so long as it’s dark outside.
Familiar (if applicable): Undine is often shadowed by a flock of Shatterbone Vultures, but they will absolutely not listen to her and are more likely to be an inconvenience than anything. Unless something goes
very wrong, they will not get anywhere near any living dragon, and will startle at most movement.
