This song has a very interesting vibe to it that I tried to capture. There is mention of "a group of hippies that fled into the mountains of Colorado to wait for doomsday," which drew me towards my chosen color palette (earthy yet funky), as well as the Blossom tertiary.
During the rest of the song, there's two described entities, one (the speaker, referred to as "Subterra Outpost") consisting of some sort of technologically advanced defensive or scouting force onboard some kind of spaceship. SO is experiencing technical difficulties and can't leave from the area they are patrolling, whereupon they encounter the second entity. Their technology recognizes this entity as a great threat, even possibly the "monster" the group was sent to patrol against, but the persons aboard the ship aren't able to visually perceive any sort of threat. It's implied that the "control" group that the ship team were sending reports back to took control of the ship when the ship's crew were unwilling to kill the creature and attempted to finish the job themselves but weren't completely successful. The communication between SO and the Control Group conks out, and it's left to interpretation exactly why; is this the inevitable degradation of the ship from whatever damaged it originally? Although that would be a pretty significant coincidence given the timing. More likely: either SO staged a coup against the Control Group or the creature (or other creatures) retaliated against the violence by their own violent means.
This narrative influenced the other characteristics of the dragon. I wanted a small dragon to represent the "creature" being small and weak-looking, but I used a Gaoler hatchling instead of a fully-grown Fae, for sake of example, because I also wanted to capture the Control Group's feelings towards this seemingly harmless creature: that it could potentially be extremely dangerous and the harmless exterior is a facade meant to engender a false sense of security. That also is why I chose Plague goat eyes. I wanted a small, scraggly-looking dragon with an ambiguous, threatening yet hippie vibe.
