She’s a runner, this one, is what her parents say when she first hatches. She gains her balance faster than any of the other hatchlings, and she’s already on her feet as the rest struggle to gain control over their limbs.
Turns out, her parents are right. She is a lot faster and agile than her siblings. Each of them find their place in the world, of course, with one among the exalted and the rest discovering their own homes. She’s not as eager to settle down, however. Her endurance levels and stamina are unbelievable. She can run for days, at a steady, loping pace. And she’s practically built to run, with strong, lean forearms and legs and a large set of wings that she uses to keep her balance when she runs and nearly nothing else. Flying is terribly overrated, she likes to think. Besides, running provides a lot more of a challenge. Plus it the sights are a lot more beautiful (and clearer, too) when you see them up close. And when she runs, she runs. She doesn’t think of anything else except for her destination (and sometimes her journey), concentrating on regulating her breathing and navigating obstacles and nothing else. She is so focused, in fact, that she doesn’t quite see what happens to her as she runs. A dragon of the Fire flight tends to be a little temperamental and hot-tempered, you see. They are passionate and intense, fire burning in their bellies. She is no different. But what is strange is that when she runs, her wings blur and shift. Bone and cartilage and skin turn to tongues of flame when she gets worked up. Each clawprint that she leaves behind simmers and steams, though it is practically unnoticeable in the Flameforger’s domain. When she huffs and pants, sparks and ash fly from her mouth. The sharp outline of her skull is visible in the fire flickering around her head, and her tail becomes a blazing whip, lashing the ground as she sprints. There are a lot of strange things in this world. Shade-possessed creatures, emperors, necromancers, blood mages, resurrected spirits. But there’s nothing quite like a she-demon made of flame sprinting through the barren, scorched lands of the Ashfall Waste that’ll turn heads and catch eyes.
