Lore
Dream Guardians are mages who can navigate the dreams of other living beings.
They believe that an endless dream space surrounds us, and that all tangible and
intangible existence is woven from the collective dreams of all living beings. This dream space is called the Sea of Stars.
Dream Guardians see it as their calling to protect the Sea of Stars, and thus the entire world, from "Ruin" by fending off the faceless evil that manifests as nightmares.
All Dream Guardians are covered in glowing runes that show the strength of their connection to the Sea of Stars. The brighter the glow, the stronger their connection.
There is no set clan or family size. Groups can range from a single individual living in a non-Dream Guardian clan to traditional family groups of a dozen or more members. Some see it as their personal responsibility to go and offer their protective services to clans around the world.
Dream Guardians spend the majority of their lifetime either sleeping or in a sleep-like trance, so they rely on their fellow clan members to provide them with supplies and protection from threats in the waking world.
In return, Dream Guardians will offer messenger services and peaceful sleep.
Since Dream Guardians can navigate the collective dreams of all living beings, they are able to serve as messengers between lucid dreamers all around Sornieth. This allows them to seek council from faraway clans, or to provide quick information exchange.
Dream Guardians appear in the Arcane, Shadow, Water and Ice Flights. According to ancient tales passed down for countless generations, only these flights are connected to the Sea of Stars that contains the endless flow of dreams.
The Arcane Flight’s connection to the Sea of Stars is the strongest. Their inherent magical nature and affinity to dreams makes them the most powerful and wise Dream Guardians.
The Shadow Flight’s connection to the Sea of Stars is formed via their love for the night. Just like the shadows, dreams are fickle and can easily play tricks on the mind.
The Water Flight’s connection to the Sea of Stars grows from their skills of divination and their natural fluidity. Water Dream Guardians effortlessly glide through dreams like they would the ocean.
The Ice Flight’s connection to the Sea of Stars is weak and easily broken. Unlike their fluid water siblings, ice dragons need to expend considerable amounts of energy to navigate the flow of dreams.
Naming conventions
Hatchling Dream Guardians born into an existing family of Dream Guardians are usually named according to the traditions passed down within that family.
Traditional names often include the word “Dream”, like “Dreamcatcher”, “Dreamwalker”, “Dreamweaver”, or have associations with dreams, sleep, stars and the sky, like “Morpheus”, “Selene” or “Layla”.
Dream Guardian hatchlings born to non-Dream Guardian parents like to choose a fitting name for themselves once they embrace their roles.
