These dragons were made up of shadow, and could destroy anything with their dark powers. When they left the world's corners for other lands, they began inadvertently destroying even more, as their packs devoured any living thing they could find, and formerly vibrant with life became lifeless wastelands. These dragons are known as Displacers. Displacer Transformations Displacers are dragons transformed by fragments of the shade. As these fragments usually take the form of rocks or crystals, they are called shade stones. It is believed by Displacer Packs that an an entity known as The Void Empress spread these shade stones throughout the land long ago. When the Shade was destroyed, the Void Empress placed the remnants of the Shade in Sornieth´s darkest places, so that it could return again when the time was right. The Void Empress then hid from the world, but comes out of hiding every ten years to help the Shade reform. If a dragon comes into contact or even sees a shade stone, it is corrupted by the darkness and permanently transformed into a Displacer. Each transformation is unique, but some things are similar between every transformation. A displacer´s mind and body are altered by a shade stone. Perhaps the most strange mutation caused by a shade stone is the fact that light never touches the dragon, as it is displaced by the dragon's presence. The reflected light causes dragons to see the multiple illusory copies of the Displacer. This mysterious quality of corrupted dragons gives them their name. The transformation also causes the scales of a corrupted dragon change to a dark color as the dragon is cloaked in darkness. The Displacer gains a Savage temper and it loses any compassion or love in it's heart. A Displacer also gains some dark powers via contact with a shade stone. Similar to how all displacer's have different transformations but there are similarities between each one, each displacer has a different set of powers but one power is present in all displacers- the ability to breathe blasts of pure shadow. These blasts of darkness have unpredictable effects. A dragon hit by the blast usually is injured severely but further harm to the mind or body of the victim is unlikely. However, sometimes a dragon will lose their memories, transformed into a Displacer by the blast, and occasionally, the victim is erased from existence entirely. Displacers can launch their blasts of shadow at will, but sometimes this power activates against the Displacer´s will. This dark power is present in all Displacers, but a Displacer also has other abilities bestowed on it upon transformation. However, other than these similarities, every Displacer is different. Each individual undergoes a different transformation and obtains different powers via corruption. The lair of a Displacer also changes. The areas where Displacer live are forever changed by the displacer's presence. When a Displacer is created, all plant life in a five mile radius wilts and dies. Shade cloaks the land, and caverns open up in the earth. Social Behavior A Displacer is a being of darkness. Due to the shadow in their hearts, they are incapable of feeling love for other dragons. However, some displacers do form packs of anywhere from 20 to 100 dragons as a defense mechanism. A Displacer in a pack only works together for itself, taking advantage of the protection and food it's pack gives it. Solitary displacers rarely join packs later in life, but some found their own packs with their hatchlings. Displacer hatchlings are black and purple like their parents and require a lot of care. Female Displacer hatchlings have a set of spikes on their back, but males and females transformed via corruption lack this trait. When a displacer hatchling is born within a pack, it is cared for by the clan. However, this care is only to ensure the hatchling´s survival, so it can defend it´s parents. After all, the more dragons in the pack, the more defense each member of the pack gets. If the mother does not have a pack, the mom usually leaves it behind to die. As such, only a small number of displacer hatchlings survive outside of the safety of packs. However, sometimes the mother dragon stays with the hatchling, forming a pack. Displacer's hunt in their packs, dining on Insects, birds, and sometimes dragon hatchlings. They move as one, cornering their prey and toying with them before the final blow. Displacers do not always hunt for food- they also hunt for sport, maybe more than they hunt for food. After killing it's prey, the displacers fight each other to claim the kill. The strongest Displacer always claims the food and any items the enemy was carrying, and the others have to hunt for something else. The hunt then continues until all displacer's in the pack are out of energy and cannot hunt any more. The pack then camps near their territory for the rest of the day. This cycle continues until the land's prey is decimated and no life is left over. Then, the pack leaves for more fertile lands. Solitary Displacers have to hunt for much longer than those with packs, and their prey gets away more, so they are more likely to starve. However, all Displacers in a pack take part in the hunts, including those that have already eaten, so one Displacer always dominates. A single individual will win all the battles and grow more powerful from it's victories, while other dragons have little chance of growing in power. As a result of this, one Displacer in a pack gets all the food while the rest starve, only able to feed on whatever food scraps the dominant Displacer leaves behind. This dominant Displacer is called the Alpha. It is easy to identify an alpha, as it is smarter than the rest of it's pack and will be decked out in trophies from past battles. Displacer packs have little to no organization and act like animal packs more than civilized families. There is little to no hierarchy or roles within the pack- Displacers only recognize their Alpha and no other positions of power exist. Packs do not get along well- if two packs meet, they will almost always fight with one another. However, Displacers are rather smart, and remember the boundaries of the hunting grounds of rival packs, so fights almost never happen. Displacers usually do not keep a territory, and move wherever prey is abundant and foes are scarce. Though they can stay in a hunting ground for over a year, the pack will move on if food becomes hard to find. Displacers have no ties to the land they hunt in unless it is an exceptional hunting ground, and even then, they will move on if food can no longer be easily found. When a Displacer pack moves, the pack´s members bring everything they own with them in strange black bags, which reflect light causing others to see multiple copies of the bag- rather like a displacer. If a pack is challenged by a foe for a hunting ground, a Displacer pack will normally fight for it´s life to defend it, but will abandon the hunting ground if there is not enough prey to justify a fight. Displacer Hoards Displacers keep large hoards as a way to show their power. Most of the items in a hoard have no practical use and are usually battle trophies- Displacers do not value gold, gems, or other treasures unless they were obtained in a fight. The harder a trophy was to obtain, the more valuable it is. Hoards are important status symbols in Displacer packs. Displacers make sure to display their hoards to show their power and strength- a large hoard does not show a Displacer´s strength if others never see it! Large hoards are valued above strength in Displacer packs, and an Alpha Displacer can be replaced by a less powerful one if the weaker Displacer manages to acquire a large hoard of battle trophies. However, in the end, strength is still more important than having a large hoard, since the strengh of a displacer and the size of their hoard go hand in hand. The strongest Displacers usually make more kills and get more trophies for their hoard, while the weaker ones usually do not win fights much and therefore have much smaller hoards. Displacers do keep some objects for practical purposes. Displacers craft many objects, but their creations are usually crude and have no fine details. Because of this, anything with fine details is highly valued by packs. Weapons are usually not crafted, and Displacers usually get their weapons by scavenging them from other foes. Displacers make sure to use every part of a kill if they can, and take any materials they can. Usually, every Displacer, starting with the Alpha, takes something from a defeated enemy. If anything is left over, it goes to the first displacer who can grab it. Displacers frequently gather pelts of fur from the bodies of their prey, which can be crafted into pieces of clothing. Tusks are considered the most important item used for practical purposes in most packs. Though the tusk of an enemy is usually nothing more than a trophy, a sufficiently large tusk can have runes carved into in for record keeping. Displacers have their own system of writing and language, and when they carve records into these tusks, they use this language. Each pack has their own language and alphabet of runes, and the language of the oldest packs have existed for thousands of years and many generations. Record keeping in packs is usually entrusted to a pack scribe. This is because the tusks Displacers write on can be hard to come by, and if an inexperienced carver makes a mistake, the whole tusk is ruined. One of the most valuable treasures a Displacer can find is a magical item. Displacers venerate the shade, and packs value any magic item that has the shade´s powers or could be used to help it return to the world. The Displacers do not worship any other being- they believe the deities of the flights may win short-term victories, they will inevitably fall to the shade. The Displacers also believe in an entity called the Void Empress, but she is believed to be a divine creation of the shade. She does not have the powers of a true god, and is merely a manifestation of the Shade. Displacers will risk their lives to obtain artifacts of darkness imbued with the power of the shade. Displacers also value items from the Plague or Shadow flights for their destructive power, however, items from the Light flight are destroyed by the pack. Nature items are not kept in hoards, but they are placed around a hunting ground´s borders in the hopes that their magic will lure prey to the area. When Displacers leave their hunting grounds due to a lack of prey, all Nature items are destroyed, since they failed to draw prey to the old hunting ground. Packs usually have a sorcerer who can identify whether a strange object could be magical and what powers it may have. The following items are common in Displacer hoards and can frequently be found in hunting grounds. If you see a lot of them, there may be a pack nearby. Shadeheart cannot kill an infected dragon directly, but many infected dragons die by injury caused by their aggressive attitudes. While dragons with Shadeheart could live a long life, sadly very few ever do.

For some strange reason, a Crystalscale cannot be infected with Shadeheart.

This subspecies was inspired by the Displacer Beast, a DND monster. I thought the concept would make a nice Flight Rising subspecies.
