Ullr was once a perfectly normal Fae, but was cursed into his Mirror-Maren form by his sorceress sister. He's perfectly happy with this turn of events, as it has actually given his life purpose: he has found his calling as the clan's Maren Liaison, which is important work for a clan based primarily underwater, and getting insight into a whole new culture is very fulfilling for him. (What he doesn't know is that his sister was actually trying to help him find his purpose when she cast her spell, though it didn't turn out as she intended at all - not that she'd ever admit that.)

Nerida's mother is a powerful mage whose experimentation has altered her genetic makeup, granting additional fins and gills to her descendants, the first of whom is Nerida herself. Nerida's mutations are such that she finds it much easier to breathe water than air, but this barely registers to her because she spends half her time obsessively recounting the Tidelord's prophecies, and her other half trying to locate him, using divination or plain old legwork, together with her Maren companion. She's not a literal mermaid, but she's awfully close!

Nerida's young nephew, Waimoku, has even more drastic mutations that include seashell-like scales, a long mane that constantly gets tangled with kelp, and eyes all over his body. While he isn't exactly shunned, nobody in the clan is quite sure what to make of him, and he has retreated to a distant area of the den while he tries to figure out what he wants to do with his life - what he [i]can[/i] do, given his self-perceived disfigurements. Although his clanmates tell him they have forseen his great destiny, he can't help but feel this is cruel mockery on their part, and his destiny is to die alone. It's tough being a moody teenager.
