The moon above Sornieth shines down bright upon you, illuminating the field around you. In your peripherals, you can see bare stalks, twisted and darkened trees, and mounds of dirt. You’ve been traveling for a while, and exhaustion is beginning to take hold of you. So you make your way towards those trees, resigning yourself to curling up amidst the roots and sleeping for the night. As you bed down for the evening, you get the sense that you’re being watched. You glance around, yet see nothing. You chalk it up your anxieties to being in unfamiliar territory and after a while, you manage to fall into a slightly fitful sleep. The rustling of leaves is faint, but enough to wake you up. You slowly blink your eyes open to clear them of sleep and yawn, pushing yourself into a sitting position and glancing around, searching for the source of the noise. You see nothing, and eventually settle back down, letting yourself fall back asleep. You still feel like you’re being watched. You awaken again, a few hours later, feeling more uncomfortable than you did when you first fell asleep. It’s near dawn now, with the sun’s rays just beginning to creep over the horizon. You stand and gather your items, and begin on your way. You don’t make it very far, because an entire clan’s worth of dragons have stopped you and have you surrounded, claws, teeth, and weapons at the ready. Sitting off to the sides of what appears to be the leader of the clan are two oddly-artificial looking mirrors, staring at you with glassy eyes.

The group brainstormed for hours upon hours, bouncing ideas off of each other until the sun began to creep over the horizon, breaking apart the storm clouds. Almost with this sunrise, a consensus was reached, and the Scarecrows were born.

Well… less born, more created.

The first one was created for the pair, using the body of a recently deceased Mirror. With the combination of all present, the first Scarecrow blinked to life, his eyes still somewhat dim. He turned to the two- a Pearlcatcher and a Skydancer, both of their forms a pure white stained with deep crimson- and clicked his jaws together a few times.

“Awaiting assignment.”

Before the others could ask for assistance with creating more, the trio fled, returning to their territory. Before entering home, the Mirror was given his assignment- to fly swiftly and silently and always serve as the first line of warning should any entity cross the territory’s line.

With this assignment, the Mirror’s eyes lit up a vibrant red. It shuffled its wings a few times, its tail lashing across the ground.

“Assignment accepted. Duty commencing.”

Scarecrows were created for one reason, and one reason only: to keep a constant watch over something. In most cases, this is a clan's territory.

The first Scarecrow, codenamed "Mommet," was created by Galahad and Hemal, two dragons from the clan Vernichtung. They were created because of the pair's paranoia and constant need to know what every member of their clan was doing at all times. They needed extra sets of eyes, and one night, surrounded with a few dragons they considered "friends," the idea for a creature that could remember everything it saw and relay it perfectly to its master was born.

Mommet served by himself for awhile, until it became apparent that the clan had grown to where more than one Scarecrow was necessary. Galahad and Hemal, upon this realization, left once again under the cover of night. A few days later, they returned, another Scarecrow in tow. This one was also a Mirror, of the female variety.

Despite initially thought to not possess any emotions or feelings, Mommet seemed to take a liking to this other Scarecrow. She called herself Lemongrass, as though the name had already been given to her from somewhere else.

Now, both Mommet and Lemongrass watch over Vernichtung's territory, always next to each other, always surveying together. When their surveying ends for the day, they return to a dark tree on the edge of the clan, so that, even when not on duty, they can still serve their purpose.

With that being said, Scarecrows do tend to lean more towards the slender, sleek looking species, if only because of the necessity to be swift and silent.

Behaviors

Scarecrows display only certain qualities of living dragons- namely, they require a “sleeping” period to recharge (during which another Scarecrow will head out, ensuring a territory is watched at all times) and they are able to breed and raise young. These offspring will also be Scarecrows; however, they will remain inactive and sedentary until assigned.

Besides these two behaviors, Scarecrows are unlike other dragons. They lack free will and individuality, and behave exceptionally robotically.

If a territory is under threat of attack, and a clan has more than one Scarecrow available, they will all be sent out as a scouting party. When this occurs, they behave as one body, moving and scouting together.

Should a Scarecrow be destroyed or otherwise rendered unusable, its remains will burn away into nothing and all memories associated with it will be transferred to another Scarecrow belonging to the group. If no such Scarecrow exists, the memories are lost forever.

Capabilities

Swift and Silent Flight
Scarecrows have the uncanny ability to make absolutely no sound when flying. When one is circling overhead, the only way to know is if you were to look up. The only time any sound can be heard is during a takeoff and landing.

Impeccable Memory
Scarecrows remember everything they have ever seen, from creation to destruction/decommission. When prompted, they will relay information that they have seen from any period of time that they existed in.

Creature Bonding
Despite being entirely created creatures, Scarecrows can bond with organic beings. This is done solely for the purpose of gathering more information- once a Scarecrow has chosen its companion, a “link” of sorts is created between the two. From that point on, anything that the companion sees, the Scarecrow sees, and vice versa.

Other Tidbits

There are rumors circulating in some clans that not all Scarecrows are artificially made. A few of the more secretive, isolated clans- those that may not have the means to get their own, specially-made Scarecrows- seem to have taken it upon themselves and made their own replicant Scarecrows. Sometimes, if you get close enough, you can see desperate, scared eyes staring back at you, begging for release.

Some believe that Lemongrass is one of these dragons, having been taken from her home and forced into servitude.
