TOPIC | [LORE] The Droseran Domain
Chapter 27

Two By Two

  • Cerise begins drawing up plans of how she wants the new territory to look as they travel
  • She plans to divide it into regional rings, concentrating power in the centre, and having the boundary guards maintain a perimeter
  • Camphrenie feels out of sorts away from the forests he knows, but remains diligent in his work
  • Every day he circles the caravan and counts up all clan members to ensure they're accounted for
  • When going about his route one day, he notices a clan of fae with one young (but already larger than them) dragon, the likes of which he'd never seen before
  • He informs Cerise of their presence, and she attends to the matter
  • The fae clan explain that they took this goaler with hopes for her to be their pack mule, but she proved too wilful and inept to do so
  • Now, they merely intend to sell her
  • Cerise had always had a reduced interest in ancient breeds, but elects to accept the hatchling anyway
  • She names her Berrina, and tells her of how cheap she was to buy- they clearly valued her little, and she would do well to be worth more to her new clan
  • The hatchling is frightened, and Cerise feels she has potential if she is grateful enough
  • Besides, her feelings on ancient breeds have been changing as she's worked out a new plan
  • The dragons of Sornieth... they are impure, she feels
  • Their impurities have made them weak
  • But if she can find two of each breed of dragon, and ascend with them into the stars of The Theoretix Plane, she and these perfect dragons can become retixs themselves
  • They can become new gods
  • In doing so, she believes she can make the ideal clan, eternal and perfect
  • First step will be to gather the breeding pairs, two by two
  • Then, select the most pure and perfect dragons of each breed
  • Then, they need only construct a ship

Chapter 28

Fracturing Sects

  • Pashitrix is not interested in Cerise's 'two by two' plan
  • Retixs work hard to stand out- the idea of introducing more confusion to the situation she's aligned herself with is problematic
  • How can she be the Droseran Domain's retix if all the dragons of the Droseran Domain become retixs?
  • More than anything her goal is just to play with Cerise for her own amusement, and gain definition in the process
  • Both know the tension is there, and sometimes it's hard to keep the clan at large from noticing as well
  • Despite introducing Pashitrix as she did, Cerise finds herself trying to steer the congregation's attentions back onto Yvel who she can speak for more
  • Pashitrix meanwhile displays her power in flourishes, gaining adherence through intimidation
  • Others still see this understated war and find comfort in Droseran- few know the skittish faux-fae personally, but the familiarity of them as a god associated with nature and quiet is a comfort
  • Nugget and other dragons of the gathering variety, for instance, align themselves with them
  • Most of the Founding Family is geared to see Yvel as the most deific since their treatment has always been directly drawn through relationships with her
  • Meanwhile outsiders to the family find themselves awed by Pashitrix's newness and bold performance of imminent godhood
  • Cerise grumbles about all this, but ultimately Pashitrix still laughs and assures her of their current alliance
  • It is all, she assures her, little more than a road trip game for them to engage in as they travel

Chapter 29

Settlement and Expansion

  • The clan finds its new territory among the forests of the far western Viridian Labyrinth
  • They cannot see the coast, nor smell its salt in the air, but it would not be a far flight if one wanted (and Cerise allowed them) to make the journey
  • Cerise's priorities are where they have always been, putting dragons to work on establishing the new Founding Family Estate on top of a sharp mountain at the centre of their lands
  • Cerise calls the peak Mt Gall, and sets to making it's maze of Galling Caverns her own personal lair
  • She does allow Etchuan to set up a new mushroom farm in its more surface level strata, though
  • The other Droserans settle where they stand, not afforded caves as roofs until proper lairs can be built
  • Camphrenie gives Berrina what shelter he can underwing, but soon there is another hatchling to worry about beyond the Found Family's protection
  • Bellina finds him, a young spiral, as she goes out to begin accumulating new stores of potion ingredients
  • She cares little about the thing, and leaves him in the brambles where he lays unconscious
  • She does mention him at the night's gathering however, and Eckle's ears twitch to attention
  • There hasn't been much for her to test her skills on yet, and she is eager to help this lone hatchling
  • Nolly for strength, and Nicht for Bellina's directions, go with her to find the spiral
  • He's awake by now, but delirious
  • Bruised, cut, and concussed, they take him by the fire
  • Eckle treats him, even taking him into the caves and ensuring he has a soft nest to sleep in
  • He recovers well, though recalls little of his past- he's young enough that that's not much of a surprise to anyone
  • He is named Karroe, and made the first greudence of the Droseran Domain in its new territory

Chapter 30

Blood and Heart

  • There is endless work to be done in the new territory
  • Only so many supplies were brought during the exodus, so stores must be replenished
  • Places to store such things need construction too, as do so many other pieces of vital infrastructure
  • Anto and Minilly and every beastclan member they've befriended spend long days hammering large branches into the ground to form pens, and carving channels for the big river running through the territory, Midvein, to pool into
  • Eckle wants to construct a dedicated Sickbay for the Domain as well, with those she has helped heal in the past happy to lend a claw- though, as an esteemed Founding Family member, she need only request the help anyway
  • Nugget's new farmhouse is a different matter, but his sons as well as Mephistopheles and Droseran are eager to assist
  • Like most the clan, Medarel has a lot on his mind
  • He's taken out of his musing when Madeleir and Murgon approach him and Yvel for help
  • The pair have been trying to have a new brood since before they left the outskirts of the Everbloom Gardens, to no avail
  • They couldn't understand why, since they'd had a pair before
  • But they were hoping Medarel would help them as a donor in a feuclen relationship
  • Yvel, empathetic and eager to help, makes her enthusiasm for the idea known
  • Yvel wants to befriend her sister and brother-in-law, and remembers that it was easier for them all to get along when they had hatchlings
  • Madeleir wants him specifically for the role because of his maturity and kindness
  • There is also a part of her, however deep down it is, that thinks it might protect her side of the family if she blurs the lines between her branch and Yvel's in Cerise's eyes
  • Medarel isn't entirely comfortable with the idea at first, but ultimately agrees to try
  • They soon succeed, resulting in a brood of three eggs hatching three fae; Enketta, Periwinkle, and Azurite
  • Despite understanding the basic principles of a feuclen relationship, Medarel struggles to know how he ought to treat these hatchlings that both are and aren't his
  • He chooses to be distant, but feels guilt for it, even as the hatchlings are lovingly raised by two devoted parents

Chapter 31

Growing Pains

  • Rianon and Etchuan's pair of hatchlings grow up with Madeleir and Murgon's new brood, and with Karroe and Berrina too
  • Isaniah thrives learning to hunt under his mother, but Feravel chafes against the lack of a close emotional bond with either parent
  • They're tough and strong, but sensitive too- Enketta, a little braniac, teases them for being brutish, and the other hatchlings laugh
  • It's not intended as bullying, but Fera doesn't take teasing well
  • Azurite is always happy to laugh along in part since he really doesn't feel like he's very special, and worries what that might mean for him as he grows
  • He feels entitled to a sense of superiority like Meerelie and Pheredon always have, but he knows he doesn't really have any grand talent either
  • Meanwhile Enketta is so smart (even if she'd obnoxious about it), and Periwinkle is an especially kind and patient dragon
  • Murgon sometimes jokes within the safety of their lair that if Cerise paid more attention, she might take Peri for a retix just like Yvel
  • Madeleir shoots him a glare when she overhears that one
  • Camphrenie is determined to have a hand in Berrina's upbringing, feeling responsible for her since he noticed her first
  • She spends a lot of time walking with him as he works, determined to join him as a Boundary Guard one day
  • Cerise defines the boundaries of the new Domain territory more strictly than at the previous location using anti-shade wards she has Bellina set up around the perimeter
  • The wards are set into large boulders, and Camphrenie is tasked with checking them for damage or interference regularly
  • Karroe is a happy and energetic hatchling, but he feels his life changes forever when Ebrejia comes back to the Domain one day with an egg that hatches another spiral
  • The lost egg's resident is named Emerald, and she is made a fellow greudence of the clan
  • Her maturation syncs up with the rest of the hatchlings around, and Karroe becomes smitten with her
  • They become friends, though she doesn't return his feelings, and regularly reminds him he's best off getting over them (to little success)
  • So many hatchlings running around, including greudences, and with grand plans for further expansion looming, Cerise orders the construction of The Nursery
  • It will be a place for the raising of greudences, as well as the gathering of young dragons for centralised training and teaching
  • While no adult dragon is designated to take up leadership once established, it's openly understood by all that despite Murgon's jokes, Cerise has indeed noticed Periwinkle and deigned them good for the task upon their maturation
  • Bianca and Gurudule nesting (deuclenii? No one is quite sure what the nature of the trio's relationship is anymore), Cerise is pleased that clan expansion seems to be speeding up
  • Perhaps Pashitrix was right to have had them move

Chapter 32

Day and Night

  • Bianca and Gurudule's nest hatches a brood of two boys, Penekahra and Marcidon
  • Their deucleni parents love them, as does their auntie Lelena
  • They grow up being raised really by all three of them, together at Bianca's newly constructed Mortuary
  • Marci is a quiet child, with Kahra the more outgoing brother
  • Kahra loves his brother a lot though, and doesn't want him feeling left out- he always brings him over to play with him and the other hatchlings
  • It makes their parents happy to see
  • If Enketta ever makes a rude comment, Kahra jumps to defend Marci, even as Marci himself rarely notices or understands
  • Overall the boys get along with everyone though, no one really having anything against either of them
  • Marci knows his brother is kind to him, and to repay him, starts sneaking into the stores to fetch extra snacks for him
  • He has a talent for moving slowly and silently, and his dark colouration helps him blend in with the shadows
  • After doing it for a while, Bianca notices this habit- she tells the boys to go easy since Madeleir can notice any time, and they might get in trouble
  • Marci agrees, and the boys move on, but Bianca starts paying special attention to Marci's learning hunting and basic combat techniques at the newly established Training Grounds
  • They are designed for the Guards and Boundary Guards, but young dragons are welcomed to come try their skills and learn fundamentals
  • Kahra is better at flight and outright combat, but notices how Marci can sneak up on most anyone
  • He is light on his feet and tough to keep track of
  • Kahra whoops and claps at every success Marci has
  • Bianca brings it up casually at the dinner gatherings, and it becomes a topic of conversation beyond their little family circle
  • One minute they're congratulating Emerald on her allocation to the role of clan treasurer for her skills in mathematics, the next they're joking what title Marci could get for being sneaky- Chief Spy?
  • Cerise is seriously interested
  • It makes Marci shy, but Kahra encourages him to be proud that even their clan leader is impressed by him
  • From then on Cerise starts keeping tabs on the boy, to Bianca's increasing nervousness
  • Gurudule isn't so sure what she's so nervous about, and she struggles to give a specific reason
  • Marci starts trying even harder to work on his talents
  • Isaniah was already made Chief Hunter, so he's not sure what he's working for, but he wants to do good
  • He starts going out to train in the forest by himself at night
  • Sometimes when he does this, he starts to notice he's not alone
  • Eventually, though still just a fledgling, Nicht approaches him and tells him he's been recognised for his talents
  • As such, he is being summoned for a meeting with Cerise in her Galling Caverns
  • Nicht leads Marci to Cerise, Bellina, and Pheredon
  • Cerise begins to speak on the genetic diversity of the clan, and her goals for their growth in number
  • She goes on to explain that Marcidon himself has the potential to be instrumental in this work
  • Cerise tells him that so many clans out there are cruel places for hatchlings to grow up
  • Meanwhile here in the Droseran Domain, through worshipping retixs they are kept safe
  • It is a good clan to be part of, she tells him
  • Better than so many
  • Many hatchlings are put to work young, mistreated, living in harsh landscapes and just unable to thrive as they should
  • Since that will never happen here, and the Domain wants to grow, she wanted to start taking in these poor, unloved hatchlings
  • It would help them find a better life, and help the clan they both love
  • Marci is taken in by her words, wanting to help any suffering young hatchling he can
  • Cerise is happy to hear it, motioning Pheredon forth to show the first hatchlings she sent her own son to retrieve
  • A bogsneak named Tripp, a guardian named Ammonite, and a sandsurge named Harmony
  • They would have better lives here
  • Marci is shocked, having seen these hatchlings at the Nursery under Periwinkle's care just recently, their having assumed the position of Chief of Hatchlings
  • He did not know they had suffered, and Cerise explains that through a potion Bellina had brewed, they had been saved the burden of remembering how they suffered
  • Marci believes her words, and is amazed
  • Pheredon is strong, the leader continues, but not subtle
  • Marci meanwhile has the ideal skills to enter a cruel clan, rescue the hatchlings, and take them back to her ridgeback son to escort homeward
  • He will be doing such good in this work, if only he will agree
  • Overwhelmed at the thought that he can be so useful, Marci is all too willing to agree
  • But secrecy is important in this matter- to prevent the triggering of their bad memories, the leader explains
  • To all within the clan, the claim would be that Ebrejia found lost eggs and called the pair to pick them up and drop them off
  • As eager as Marci is, the leader and her team want to ensure total security about all this
  • For this reason, and to protect himself from the suffering he will be seeing young dragons endure, he must take potions before and after these missions as well
  • She claims even Pheredon has requested his memories of his previous pickups be taken from him
  • Marci is still eager to help, too young and naïve to see through the lies presented to him
  • Soon he is out at night scouting on Pheredon's back for clans to investigate
  • Upon descending, he falls under Bellina's control and steal eggs and newhatches from their nesting grounds
  • Forcing her to imbibe potions as they ride Pheredon back home, their first team effort is the imperial hatchling, Dusk
  • Marci continues living with his family for a time, but things are different now
  • Initially so happy to see his brother succeed, being outclassed leaves Kahra jealous and distant
  • He has no claim to being special of his own, and he finally realises that his brother had always been fine on his own
  • Kahra isn't needed, and he isn't special
  • His best friend Karroe is already a Sky Scout now too, when will it be his turn to gain a purpose?
  • Pheredon starts encouraging Marci to move out, anyway- his comings and going are too obvious when he lives with other dragons not in on their operation
  • His mind is left weak and open to suggestion over time, and he does as told
  • Pheredon digs him a burrow on the edge of the Domain in an area dense with shrubbery
  • He goes out less, doesn't have as much contact with his family
  • Nicht brings him food as he comes to the gathering less and less, but he's always diligent at the work Cerise gives him
  • Even as he loses himself in the fog his mind is consumed by

Chapter 33

Apprentice Mine

  • Medarel tries to stay on top of things in the Founding Family
  • The clan is growing, and there is more and he doesn't know, but he wants to at least know what's going on with the dragons closest to him
  • He can't help but be disappointed in how Etchuan has raised- or rather, failed to raise- his brood
  • Isaniah seems happy at least, but Feravel seems miserable most of the time
  • Medarel wants to help his grandchild
  • He feels responsible for not stepping in previously
  • He had cared for the brood when they were younger and Etchuan would simply leave them in his parent's care, but he'd never known the exact nature of his son's deal with Rianon
  • As such, he'd felt unsure about if he was able to step in
  • He's started to notice a trend he doesn't like, though
  • Yvel grew up lonely and hurt, and Medarel knew well what it was like for her siblings (though Pheredon seemed like a baffling exception)
  • Azurite, another youth he felt unequipped to approach due to their particular mode of relation, never seemed fully at peace
  • It was subtle, but Medarel saw the way he hunched over and hid from Cerise's gaze, the way he seemed to always be trying to find something to brag about or to criticise another dragon for
  • He seemed lost, and desperate to find exceptionalism- and tear down others if he couldn't
  • Medarel felt he was noticing a tendency for Founding Family members to become isolated and depressed, and he doesn't like it
  • While he doesn't think it is his place to get involved where Azurite is concerned, he decides to be more proactive when it comes to Feravel
  • As such, he approaches the young fae and asks if they've any interest in becoming his apprentice
  • Fera has shown a prowess in combat, and being Yvel's personal guard and an occasional shade hunter, he can show them how to progress the skills they've exhibited
  • They are hesitant, on edge, and unwilling to trust their grandfather
  • Knowing they're under Cerise's constant scrutiny though, they begrudgingly agree
  • Meanwhile, the sandsurge Harmony shows an interest in technology from a young age
  • Enketta, Chief Engineer as soon as she was fledged, takes an interest in the hatchling for this reason
  • The rule is plain and set in stone, though; preservation of skills within the Founding Family are important, so they could only take on their own to teach
  • Enketta does not care
  • Cerise, grandmother, she argues- Harmony is a prodigy
  • It would be a complete and utter waste not to pursue her skills!
  • Cerise does not appreciate being challenged, but Enketta is a stubbornly aggressive dragon
  • She shows off wonderful technology; heated mats for nests, water purifiers, electric lights
  • Once the gathered congregation oos and aahs, she reveals they were Harmony's work
  • Cerise is frustrated, but finally agrees to amend the rule
  • Harmony is officially Enketta's apprentice the next day
  • Medarel can't help but wonder if that sort of bullheaded determination didn't prove so much more meaningful than his cautious approach
  • He wonders what life in the Domain would be life if Ebrejia stuck around more

Chapter 34

Stress-Bloom

  • Penekahra does get his day, becoming a sky scout; though the fanfare is limited to his family
  • Avoiding the old lair for the traces of his brother that remain, he moves in with Karroe
  • Karroe already lives right next to Everon, so the imperial demolishes the wall between and creates the Sky Scout's Den for them all to share
  • Kahra scarcely sees Marci now, but few do, since he and Pheredon are busy bringing in so many new hatchlings
  • In quick succession there's Nina, Regeliese, Shrice, Ivrasyl, Mylene, Jetroa, and Nenkal
  • Meanwhile Pashitrix and Coveleryl have a brood of their own, two daughters named Skiddle and Trina
  • They are extremely chaotic, knowing that their mother holds power and adores them, so they can get away with whatever they want
  • To free up room in The Nursery for all the new greudences, the previous generation old enough to move out is pushed to do so and claim the titles to become full members of the Congregation, rather than just Initiates
  • Harmony begins living in Enketta's workshop, secure for her work in technology
  • Tripp devotes himself to fishing full time, building a ramshackle lair near Midvein
  • Ammonite becomes a scavenger, and though his personal interest is in history, some of what he brings back is deemed useful to justify his scavenging
  • The now mature imperial Dusk, however, establishes an art studio for her lair
  • Cerise is not impressed by this devotion to something as ephemeral and unutilitarian as visual artworks
  • To make use of her regardless, Cerise puts Dusk to work however she can
  • She is to create portraits of Yvel, Pashitrix, and Droseran
  • She is made to paint sprawling murals depicting The Theoretix Plane and clan history
  • Her works are beautiful, but Cerise still resents her
  • Many others start to avoid her as well; if Cerise is displeased, no one wants to be associated with whoever caused it

Chapter 35

Flee Eastward

  • Out foraging for berries with which to make wine, Dilli runs into a murky green mirror named gremlin
  • Dilli warns them that they are trespassing on fiercely guarded territory, but gremlin is not afraid
  • They are very strong, and have seen the Boundary Guards; nothing they can't take easily
  • Dilli is impressed, and the pair forage together for a time before going their separate ways
  • The auraboa hears of how they come from a clan with no name where the dragons are all equal, and tells Valadinja of this upon returning to their lair
  • Valadinja is appealed to by the idea of such a clan, especially now when there's such stress
  • The clan is growing, so Cerise is putting more pressure on everyone to provide the resources needed for it to do so sustainably
  • She has thus decided in advance what the current batch of hatchlings will be doing once they mature, mostly assigning them to food gathering and various guarding duties
  • The auraboas know Cerise has never bought completely into the worth of their work
  • Luxuries like alcohols are trifles, even though they can be put to use
  • So they decide they will look for gremlin again, and run off to their clan
  • They take off on an evening to do so, but Nicht emerges from the shadows and asks what they're doing
  • Dilli doesn't falter; they are going to go learn to fight from a dragon more powerful than any in the Droseran Domain, and form connections with their clan in the process
  • Nicht is intrigued, fetching Cerise
  • Valadinja is tense allover, but Dilli assures her that they'll be fine
  • Nicht returns with Cerise, and ominously, Bellina as well
  • Cerise approves of their departure, but determines they must return with a hatchling from this foreign clan as well
  • A male mirror, to be specific
  • Furthermore, Bellina will give them a pair of amulets for good fortune
  • Valadinja is shocked; they are an ancient breed, any clothing will linger uncomfortably against their scales
  • The veilspun nods- it will be uncomfortable, but she will be able to sense if they remove them, and send help
  • 'Help', Valadinja knows, means Pheredon or another guard coming after them
  • Bellina assures the auraboas they can remove them when they return, since it will be clear that they are safe
  • Dilli agrees to these terms, smiling placidly, and the two slither off into the dense forest beyond the borders
  • Valadinja asks Dilli if they think they'll be able to remove the amulets without getting caught
  • They don't think so, but figure their little holiday is still worthwhile
  • If gremlin is so strong, perhaps others from their clan are too
  • If they build a strong connection there, learn from them well, perhaps one day they can help change things in the Domain

Chapter 36

Misguided Affections

  • Pheredon and Marcidon bring three more hatchlings to the domain; Ampa, Elero, and Quivetel
  • There are more hatchlings around than there ever has been in the Domain's history
  • Ampa, a shy little pearlcatcher, grows overwhelmed and tired of the noisy company of other hatchlings sometimes
  • She finds solace when Minilly visits to check on her familiar
  • He is so much more quiet, seems so much more mature, and she grows infatuated with him
  • He doesn't notice, being so focused as he is on his work, and her being just a hatchling
  • She endeavours to always have aquatic familiars so that she can keep spending time with him
  • Little Nenkal meanwhile grows an interest of his own of a very different nature
  • He likes to see how things grow
  • With apprenticing dragons outside the family allowed now, Etchuan sees this and offers an apprenticeship to the snapper
  • He accepts, and Etchuan takes him to his mushroom farm to learn skills related to soil health
  • Feravel sees his father engaging with another hatchling and is filled with jealous rage
  • Medarel warns him not to let such things consume him, but he still feels burned
  • No good, the skydancer says, will come from letting your anger consume you
