"LONG AGO when the world was young, the first god hatched from the earth, clawing his way out of his ashen tomb. he shaped and gave life to the universe, forming living creatures from the clay he had emerged from. he named himself nibiru, father of the world.
nibiru made beautiful animals and plants to accompany him, but these creatures were not equal to him. they lacked the gift of eternal life, and therefore were not fit companions for him.
and so began the creation. nibiru began to sculpt creatures like him, ones that would be perfect and wise and immortal. but when he breathed the breath of life into his creations, they were not so. they were mortal, imperfect, and fallible. nibiru gave them the quality of creativity, and they began to construct buildings and farms and art of their own, imitating their creator, and they were beautiful.
but nibiru still longed for equal companionship. the mortals' lives were short, and they returned to the earth they were made from as quickly as they were born. thus, nibiru began to work on new sculptures.
as he gave life to each new creature, he grew more and more discouraged, as they were not what he wanted. he was lonely.
but one day, as nibiru was sculpting, he cut his talon on a sculpting knife. as his golden blood dripped onto the clay, he had an idea.
he mixed his blood into the clay, and sculpted another creature. this time, when he gave it life, it was different. it was a god.
he woke, and named himself arva. he took the job of ensuring mortals were at peace during their final moments and guiding them to the afterlife.
nibiru was overjoyed, and from one block of clay he created two new gods. they named themselves october and november, and they ruled over the harvest season.
nibiru worked to create many more deities to help care for the earth and the mortals, making the pantheon of deities that exist now. some of the gods would have children with mortals, resulting in half-gods, and these beings were powerful indeed.
and that is how the world began," the story ends. you slide the ancient book back on the library shelf, coughing as dust begins to cloud around you.

the long-buried gods are stirring.
our gods are not the first. there were beings before them, forgotten under the dust of many years. they created what the new gods could not create— time, color, darkness, light, planets, and stars. there were five of them, and yet, only one remains.
nazareth was the first and the last. she has no beginning or end, and cannot be controlled by the mere gods. she is feared and revered by even nibiru. she created time, and from her sprang her four children.
gethsemane was the first child of nazareth. they gave light and warmth to their mother's universe, placing the stars and suns in the sky.
antioch, gethsemane's younger twin, created moons and planets to compliment his sibling's creations. he gave earth and seas and vegetation to his planets, filling them with color.
edom, the traitor, was the third. she was jealous of her family's creations, and she decided to create life. she created nibiru, and buried his egg deep under the earth to keep him secret and safe.
shiloh was the last. they sculpted the land antioch made into mountains and valleys, canyons and plateaus. they created rain and wind and thunder and snow, and all the seasons.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY.
serenus city was built on holy land. approximately 1,500 years old, the ancient dragons that inhabited the land believed that gods resided here, and built a village to honor and serve them. the oldest building in the city is the cathedral, built to honor these gods. the cathderal was used until around 75-100 years ago, and now has been abandoned. the city government has attempted to restore it, but workers refuse to go near it.
serenus city sits between the forest and the ocean, and many of the residents make a living off of fishing and sailing. it can be quite dangerous to sail or even swim, however, as the coast is quite rocky and there have been tales of strange creatures that live in the depths.
the forest is deciduous, but in the parts nearest to the city, some of the trees seem to stay in their autumn phase eternally, even during the spring and summer months. many suspect that this is due to the presence of the autumn deities october and november within the city. the forest is home to a great variety of life, and in recent years the rates of deformed or genetically mutated animals and plants has gone up. one hunter recently discovered a two-headed deer, which is on display in the serenus city museum of science and natural history, alongside many other fascinating genetic oddities found in the area.
besides the natural diversity present in the city, there is much cultural diversity as well. many of the native city residents are descended from the original group of settlers, but over the years many immigrants have come from other parts of the world to work in serenus city. about half of these immigrants are from the neighboring shadow city of somnum, as the relationship between serenus city and somnum city has always been strong and trade is frequent. a quarter of the immigrants are from the desert city of interitus, and the rest are from many different places.
the current population of serenus city is about 900,000, about 250,000 less than 100 years ago. there are several factors contributing to the population loss, but nobody is quite sure why it accelerated so quickly.
religion is very important to the residents of the city, as the city was founded on religion. almost all of the residents are religous, whether they believe in the new age deities or the old ones. the new age deities are the most widely worshiped, as there is the most evidence for them, but about a fifth of the population believes in the traditional gods that the city was founded for. there is no evidence suggesting the existence of these gods, but their followers still have faith, saying that their gods will one day wake and resume their rule. not much is known about their beliefs and practices, as they tend to fear outsiders, but we do know their core beliefs:
they believe that the time goddess, nazareth, has children. these children helped her create the world, but one grew jealous, and planted nibiru's egg in the ground to begin her own generation of gods. her siblings found out, and they fought, killing each other. nazareth buried them, and is waiting for them to wake and destroy the current gods and the world as we know it.
the new age believers believe that nibiru sculpted the world and created all things, including the other gods, except nazareth. nazareth was there before nibiru, and she created him, allowing him to bring life and beauty to the void. these gods are alive, and occasionally walk with the city residents. there is a temple dedicated to them in the center of the city, where many visitors go to learn about the history of the religion. it's also a popular spot for pilgrims journeying to visit the gods.

A TRAVELER'S GUIDE TO SERENUS CITY: THE MARKET.
if you visit the city, you have to visit the market. it's an unforgettable experience— the sights, the sounds, and the smells create a vibrant and fascinating atmosphere. the vendors are friendly and willing to haggle. there are foods and produce, clothes and jewelry, and many trinkets for sale, and the majority of city residents do their shopping at this market. there are smaller, more tourist-oriented markets to go to as well, but if you're looking for an authentic experience, the main market is the place to go. remember that the vendors are making their livings off of this market, so do not disrupt them or fight with them.
there have been reports of vendors selling illegal items, but the authorities have confirmed that these rumors are false. if you see anything you feel is wrong, however, it's best to look the other way.
there are many places to stay around the market, the most popular being the tipsy eagle tavern and inn. it's run by a spiral named deimos, who is one of the best cooks in the city. his food isn't gourmet, but it's flavorful and comforting. the inn is a family business, and many of his children help him in the kitchens and take care of the housekeeping. the staff is very helpful and kind, so be sure to talk to them if you need directions or have any special requests.

A TRAVELER'S GUIDE TO SERENUS CITY: THE SEA.
the port is always busy, with fishers and sailors coming to and from the city and the hotels nearby. the beach is not the most pleasant place to go if you're looking for a swim, as there are ships and large sea creatures constantly in the water. however, the view from the cliffs is extraordinary on the rare occasions when the beach isn't cloudy. there's an old lighthouse you can visit if you're looking for a thrill. rumors say that the lighthouse is haunted, because even though it's abandoned, the light is always lit.
the area of the city closest to the sea is very different from the wealthier, more densely populated areas nearer to the forest. dragons here are hardier, and they're more superstitious than the rest of serenus city. the buildings are more run-down, but it's not dangerous.
the community here is tight-knit, so if you want to experience local life, take part in their neighborhood festivals and events when you visit. the residents are happy to meet visitors, and old boat captains will be more than happy to regale you with tales of the ocean.
