They would look at the adult Gaolers performing their duties to their Order. Admiring them and wishing to come of age soon, so that they could join one of the five Orders themselves. They played together, imagining themselves as the mighty Gaolers of the different Orders, doing their secret duties for their deity, Icewarden. As the years passed, Renjiro and Naomi grew, and so did their feelings for each other, and then the day finally came. The day of the initiation ceremony, when they and all the other young, faithful Gaolers would have to dedicate their lives to one of the Orders. Excited and nervous, they embraced each other in hope to join the same Order. As the ceremony went on, Renjiro was assigned to the Seekers, and Naomi was assigned to the Sentries. That meant they wouldn't be together as much as they had always been anymore, and it disappointed them. But they made each other a promise to meet up every evening to tell the other of what the day had presented to them. On one of her shifts, Naomi found an old runestone, with two fox-like creatures painted on it. However, their fur was red, not white, like the foxes of The Fortress of Ends usually were. On the back there were words carved into it[i]: ”Neither life nor death shall keep our hearts apart"[/i]. And Naomi, finding this cute, kept the runestone with her in her satchel. One day, as the Seekers were out hunting, they heard a demonic roar. And before they could ask themselves what was going on, their commander ordered them all to retreat to the Gaolers’ prisons. A fragment of The Shade had possessed a Cragward Custodian roaming around the Gaolers’ prisons, and it was causing massive destruction. Renjiro’s heart stopped, his thoughts went straight to Naomi. He ran faster than the other Seekers could back to The Fortress. There, he saw how the giant beast had damaged the prisons and caused harm to most of the Sentries but Naomi wasn’t there. Terrified, he called out for her, running towards the roaring sounds. Where he found her, wounded and trying to escape the heavy chains of the beast. Renjiro jumped onto the beast, pulling its horns back to get it away from Naomi, and proceeding to jump down to her, holding her up with his wings. Naomi cried out and pleaded with him to get himself to safety, but he refused. He smiled, leaning his head against hers and whispered: ”[i]Neither life nor death shall keep our hearts apart[/i]”. Their hearts beat in the same rhythm, and knowing they were together, they gathered their strengths and unleashed all they had at the beast. The five Orders joined forces and took down the beast, but they were too late. As they stood and mourned their fallen comrades, a bright glow came out from one of the Gaolers’ satchels. A runestone levitated up and floated over two of the fallen Gaolers, who were huddled together in a final embrace. As the surrounding Gaolers stared, the glow turned into a bright carmine red color and it spread over the fallen Gaolers white fur coats, dying it the same color as the stone. As their fur had almost turned fully red, the stone fell to the ground, landed with a soft thud in the snow and lost its glow. Then, their chests began to rise and fall in synchrony. The Elder of the Gaoler hesitantly went closer, reaching out to touch them but before he could reach them, however, both Gaolers opened their eyes.
