Biography

Pride dooms the ignorant.

From the egg, Aerie knew herself to be different. She need only glance at her brothers to know it. While their hides glimmered beneath veins of white and gold, hers practically shimmered. Clearly she was unique. She gave herself airs, and rightfully so, taking no gruff and sharing the divinity that was her opinion freely amongst her peers.

Eventually, of course, her parents interfered. An exchange was arranged, and despite a very dignified vigil of silence to protest the unjust act, the young pearlcatcher had herself a new home.

It was.... rustic.

She quickly discovered that the Lady frowned upon building elaborate structures, as they might harm the Glade, and with few other pearlcatchers to ally with her to argue a case, Aerie was soon miserable. These dragons did not care for her wisdom, and more often than not either snarled at her or gave her that smile when she tried to socialize. Fighting and defense seemed to be the core of this clan, and she wanted nothing to do with either.

Only one paid her mind. And she really, really wished he wouldn't.

Indil's scales might shine rather prettily, almost a rival to her own immaculate form, but he was a filthy brute of a guardian who couldn't tell a feather from a turkey. She was forever stumbling into him, him and his silly little beard, and no matter how sharply she rejected him he was always there. Silent. Staring. When he did finally speak, in little more than a hissing whisper, it was to voice- of all things!- the most horrendous insult.

Her, Aerie of the Glade, reminiscent of an egg shell? A piece of trash to be ground down and turned back into the earth to feed the trees? No. She would not have it.

That night, when Iron's back was turned, she sneaked deep into the jungle, magic flicking from her agitated wings, and there in a clearing, beneath the light of a half moon, made her demands to any who might listen. With power in her voice, her very words became a spell, binding herself with their promise.

Gladekeeper answered.

No one knew quite what to make of the young pearlcatcher the next morning. What started as bemused, even envious, whispering soon twisted into murmurs of confusion and derision. Rory made his contempt no secret, in his own very blunt way. Her overflowing joy faltered, then slipped, as the clan's eye slipped from her. She looked into the river, trying to understand why their opinions had changed so quickly. They should be captivated, not distant. No matter which way she turned, sunlight struck fractals from her form; beautiful lights that danced beneath the trees. Gladekeeper had made her shine!

Indil was watching her, as ever. Seeing his reflection next to hers, rippling on the water, she suddenly understood. They thought she had painted herself. Vainly made herself up to look like a pearl, or a shell or-

.... or the glimmering inside of an eggshell.

Perhaps if the guardian had not been there, she might have let the river carry her away. No amount of scrubbing proved adequate to take the iridescent patches from her hide. Her own magic had been twisted back on her, and her words proven true. She had bound herself. For a time she hid herself away, dropping her once high-held head and leaving her wings partially unfurled to cover the worst of the patterns, feeling the utter fool. For once, Indil listened. He left her alone.

It was the little things that brought her slowly back out, in time.

Food left... well. 'Artfully' displayed by her lair.

A little wooden toy, carved by one of the clan's clever little fae.

One of the batons the spirals had carved and liked to toss around.

Flowers from the edge of the jungle, grown large with the extra sunlight there.

The guardian was waiting when she emerged to find the latest items. Copper jewelry, the match of her blight. If not for Indil gently lifting them from her claws, she might have thrown them across the clearing. As it was, she stood stock still until he finished placing them on her person, wings hanging uncertainly, and tried not to shake.

Her words had been sharp, miserable, and oft even cruel. Yet there he stood, with that stupid little beard, being utterly patient and sweet with her. The apology would not come, not yet, but a smile and lifted head seemed to be enough.

She had been a poor Charge... strange though she now was, she would try to make it right. It was something to hold onto, anyways.
