A low growl shook the starlit walls of Moondore. Alabaster could sense it. Someone was here - creeping up the mountain towards her stronghold. The beast scented the air. The acrid stench was unmistakable, even from miles away. The smell of gunpowder and old, enchanted silver.

The hunter had impeccable timing and Alabaster bared her fangs as she rose on swaying limbs. They must have known when she would be at her weakest - right before the full moon. Beneath her, three gleaming eggs rested on the shattered stone floor of the old throne room, nearly ready to hatch. The remainder of the pack slept, their forms encased in the dark mirror-like glass that surrounded her. They too awaited the full moon’s light to replenish their strength.

Even the star scryer - the great, rotating stone orb called Sidereal spun slowly in its cradle. It was nearly charged - readying itself to move the palace to some new, far-off location in the Cloudscrape Craigs. Soon, all of their powers would be restored, but Alabaster fretted for the moon had time yet to fully rise and the hunter would arrive before then. She had no choice but to face them alone.

The palace doors slammed open, a gust of cold air ushered in as the hunter stepped inside. They were an Imperial who smelled strongly of candle wax and silver with no discernible scent of their own. They clutched a gleaming pistol in one hand and a small shining vial in the other.

“I know you’re here, beast.”

The hunter’s words echoed. A stream of smoke trailed from an old silver skull strapped to the hunter’s side. Alabaster curled around her nest, her heart beating faster. Was she truly- afraid? It was only a myth that silver would pose much of a threat to a creature made of smoke and mirrors. Still, there as something about this hunter that was- different.

“Found you.”

Alabaster reared up, striking as the hunter entered the throne room. Her claws came down only on cold stone, another fissure splintering along the ground from the impact. She snarled in frustration as the hunter struck back with a flared wing, its edges imbued with a plating of silver scales. The attack sent Alabaster skidding across the room only to collide with the dark mirrors on the far wall. She sunk into the pooling depths of the mirror with a low growl. Her voice echoed around the chamber.

“You are a fool, hunter. You dare come here to confront me? Even in my weakened state, no weapon forged by dragon-kind will bring me harm. Soon, the moon will rise and I will devour you.”

The hunter only grinned. Their own teeth were sharpened like that of a beast as they uncorked the small vial they carried, drinking the elixir within. “I will not defeat you with weapons forged by dragons. You will fall to the cursed magic of your own kind.”

Alabaster smelled it then - another scent hidden under layers of silver and gunpowder. It was the scent of another beast. She leapt from the mirror just a moment too late - the hunter’s pistol fired - two bullets hitting their mark. Alabaster roared. They were not fatal shots, but she felt the burn of the bullets as they tore through her, settling deep in her chest with a searing ache.

It was then that the full moon rose, the star-scryer spinning faster as its charge completed. Alabaster dragged herself towards it- she needed only to touch it for a moment. Her claws brushed the smooth surface and the palace began to fade. Yet she had miscalculated. Her nest was left unguarded and the hunter now stood above the trio of eggs.

“No!” Alabaster roared, leaping towards her children, but it was too late. The palace dissipated, rejecting the hunter and the nest as it faded from existence- re-appearing in some distant location high in the mountain peaks.

Albus was left behind. They picked up one of the eggs, already splintering with dark cracks as it began to hatch. The hunter stood alone, a gentle powder of snow falling from the sky. They contemplated destroying the nest for a moment, but instead they replaced their pistol in its leather holster and greeted the first hatchling with a smile.

“I think you’ll make a fine hunter yet.”

High in the mountains, Alabaster wailed. The rest of her pack echoed her cries, their mournful calls reverberating eerily through the desolate peaks. The ache of the bullets still burned in Alabaster’s chest and for the first time in many moons, fear pooled within her. She pulled the twin bullets free, growling as she inspected them. They still pulsed with power and beneath her claws, the metal shifted until they warped into the forms of twin silver beasts.

“And I think you’ll make fine beasts.” She spat, “you are still tied to the hunter that created you, and you will bring them to me.”

know nothing else but the weapon you are forged to be; know no other path than bloodshed at my call, your bullets straight and true; know you cannot escape, bound to me as meaning of life; know nothing else but my deceit and lies guiding your heart to the altar of salvation to pay for your sins.

your false vows have stained pure hands with sin, forever unknowable. may the gods put your tortured soul to rest, and spare that what remains of you.
